McKendree spikers Fairman, Geiger make all-tournament team
McKendree University junior volleyball players Sophie Fairman (Staunton) and sophomore Amanda Geiger (Tomball, Texas ) were named to the all-tournament team for the Ferris State University Invitational, which was hosted by Ferris State University Sept. 4-5 in Big Rapids, MI.
Fairman and Geiger, were two of 12 players selected based on there play over the Bearcats' four matches on the weekend. Fairman collected 38 kills, averaging just under three per set. Fairman hit for a .523 percentage and added 13 blocks. Geiger put up 31 kills of her own along with seven digs and five bocks in leading McKendree to a 3-1 record.
McKendree will take its 3-1 season record into the Rockhurst University Classic this coming weekend in Kansas City, Mo.
Golfers third at Arch Cup
The McKendree University men’s golf team opened its fall season on Tuesday with a third-place showing at the Arch Cup. The one-day, 36-hole event was contested at The Legends Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.
As a team, McKendree was tied for third through the first 18 holes at 310, then shaved eight strokes off their score over the final round. The Bearcats’ team score of 612 was just 21 strokes behind the University of Missouri-St. Louis for top honors.
Sophomore Keenai Sampson (Maryville/Collinsville) began his fall campaign in impressive fashion as he brought home top individual honors from the Arch Cup. Sampson was the lone player to shoot par or better, finishing his 36 holes with an even-par score of 144. He was two strokes ahead of Craig Stefureak from Drury University for the top spot in the individual standings. Sampson opened the day with a round of 73 before firing a one-under par 71 over the final 18 holes.
Senior Nathan Nottrott (Maryville/Collinsville) and sophomore Austin Carter (Applegate, Wis./Croswell-Lexington) also registered top-20 efforts for McKendree at the Arch Cup. Nottrott was tied for 16th in the final standings at 155, while Carter finished in a tie for 20th place at 156.
Soccer teams open GLVC play
The McKendree University men’s and women’s soccer teams will begin their Great Lakes Valley Conference slates at home on Friday. The women host No. 18 Bellarmine University at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will hit the road Sunday for conference contests at University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind. The women will kick things off at noon followed by the men’s game at 2:30 p.m.
