Bearcats place third at UW-Parkside Invitational

The McKendree University men’s golf team remained busy early in the fall season with a third-place finish at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside AMFAM Fall Invitational. The 36-hole event was contested Monday and Tuesday at The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, Wis.

The Bearcats sat in a tie following Monday’s first round, just three strokes behind the leader and eventual tournament champions from the University of Illinois-Springfield. McKendree closed the tournament with a team score of 615, which was 20 shots behind UIS for the team title. Lewis University was the runner-up with a 608.

In the final individual standings, McKendree had three golfers earn top-20 finishes. Sophomores Keenai Sampson (Maryville/Collinsville) and Austin Carter led the way for the Bearcats. Sampson led McKendree for the second consecutive outing as he tied for 10th overall, carding a 36-hole score of 150. That included the team’s low round of the tournament, a 72 over Tuesday’s final 18 holes. Carter was two strokes behind Sampson in 17th place at 152. Senior Nathan Nottrott (Maryville/Collinsville) closed in a tie for 18th place at 154.

McKendree will return to the links Sept. 28-29 at the Midwest Regional to be played at Harborside Golf Club in Chicago.
