Cowgirls hand Cougars a loss

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s basketball team fell to 1-2 Friday night after an 86-61 loss at Oklahoma State.

“I thought we played hard,” said SIUE coach Paula Buscher. “We did a good job at times with execution. We still have to put together a full 40 minutes.”

SIUE battled back in the first half after being down by nine through one period. CoCo Moore scored nine of her 15 points in the second period as SIUE cut the deficit to 40-35 at halftime.

“I thought we responded and came back well,” said Buscher. “We had good fight. We felt like we were keeping it within striking distance.”

Oklahoma State, 3-0, was led by Brittney Martin’s 24 points.

“We weren’t stepping up and being as aggressive as we needed on defense,” said Buscher.

Shronda Butts powered SIUE’s offense with 23 points and a team-high five assists. The redshirt senior shot 6 of 16 from the field and hit 10 of 11 from the free throw line.

The Cowgirls used a sizeable height advantage to outscore SIUE in the paint 44-18. Oklahoma State also used 22 offensive rebounds for a 21-7 edge in second-chance points.
