The McKendree University women’s basketball team went to-to-toe with Southwest Baptist University on Saturday, but lost 51-48 following a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Bearcats fall to 1-3 overall and will travel to St. Charles, Mo., on Tuesday to play Lindenwood University at noon.
Junior forward Ellie Pusheck led all players with a season-high 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Southwest Baptist got off to a quick start and led 6-2 with just over three minutes into the game, but McKendree responded with buckets on the next two possessions to tie the game 6-6. Both teams traded scores to end the quarter tied 10-10, and the teams traded the lead again in the second quarter with SBU taking a 25-24 lead into the half.

McKendree found its groove in the third quarter, and used an 8-0 run in the middle of the period to jump out to a 36-27 lead with 3:11 left. The Bearcats dominated SBU in the paint in the quarter, outscoring the visitors, 10-2, in the post on the way to a 42-31 lead heading into the 4th quarter.
Southwest Baptist battled back in the fourth, tying the game on free throw with 3:05 left in the game. SBU held McKendree without a field goal in the final quarter, and hit a three-pointer in front of their bench at the buzzer to break open the tie game and end the game 51-48.
Mackenzie Skupa led Southwest Baptist with 12 points.
