Murray St. races past Cougars
Bryce Jones scored 16 points and the Murray State Racers cruised to a 70-54 victory over the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars on Saturday night.
Jeffery Moss made three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for Murray State (10-10, 4-3 Ohio Valley). Damarcus Croaker had 12 points and Wayne Langston added 11 for the Racers. Gee McGhee had a game-high eight rebounds and chipped in five points.
Keenan Simmons, Carlos Anderson and Grant Fiorentinos scored eight points apiece for SIU-Edwardsville (4-16, 1-7), which has lost nine of its last ten games.
Indianapolis 78, McKendree 75
The McKendree University men’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaking decision in the closing seconds Saturday afternoon at the University of Indianapolis.
Jordan Loyd hit a 21-foot shot with just 1.3 seconds remaining to lift the host Greyhounds to the Great Lakes Valley Conference win. McKendree moves to 9-8 overall and 2-7 in GLVC play. The Bearcats will return home to begin a brief two-game home stand Thursday against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.
Junior guard David Franklin (Althoff) led McKendree with a game-high 25 points while adding team-best totals of seven rebounds and four assists.
SIUE 64, Murray State 61
The Southern Illonois University Edwardsville women’s basketball improved to an Ohio Valley Conference-best 7-1 Saturday with a 64-61 triumph over Murray State at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
It was the fourth straight win for the Cougars, which improved to 12-9 overall. SIUE also has won seven of its last eight games. Murray State dropped to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the OVC.
Shronda Butts, the reigning OVC Player of the Year, led all players with 28 points. She shot 9 for 17 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. The senior guard also added eight rebounds.
SIUE will take its winning streak to Austin Peay this Wednesday at 7 p.m. before returning home for its final homestand of the regular season, which begins with Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 2 p.m.
McKendree 54, Indianapolis 51
The McKendree University women’s basketball team was in control from start to finish on Saturday in a road win against University of Indianapolis.
The Bearcats win made it a sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference contests for the women's basketball team this week after earning a 60-48 win at Saint Joseph's College on Thursday. This is the first time McKendree has won both games of a conference weekend since joining the league in 2011-12. The Bearcats improve to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the GLVC, and will host University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
Senior guards Kacey Johnson and Kelsee Ennis paced McKendree in the win with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
