Statham taking another shot at wins record

McKendree University men’s basketball coach Harry Statham will make his second attempt at a record Thursday.

The Bearcats will play a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Missouri-St. Louis at 7:30 p.m. Statham has 1,098 wins, which are tied with former Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt for the most among coaches at four-year schools.

McKendree defeated Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 28 as Statham tied the record, but the Bearcats lost to Lewis on Saturday to delay the celebration.

The Bearcats are 10-9 overall and 3-8 in the GLVC. UMSL is 8-12 and 3-9.

Althoff High graduate David Franklin leads McKendree and was the GLVC Player of the Week for his performances against Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis.

Franklin had 33 points and 11 rebounds against Wisconsin-Parkside, then came back with 22 points and six boards against powerful Lewis. He was 17-for-17 from the free-throw line.
