McKendree’s Yung named GLVC Pitcher of the Week
McKendree University freshman and former Freeburg Midget Nick Yung made a little program history late Tuesday with his selection as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 13-19.
Yung, a right-hander, is the first McKendree baseball player to receive weekly honors from the league, and his award came following a breakout performance in the Bearcats' 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon at home against Saint Joseph's College.
Yung tossed a complete-game one-hitter to lead the way for McKendree, walking just one batter while striking out three. In his seven-inning gem, Yung needed just 68 pitches to help spark the Bearcats to the game one triumph. That effort helped spark McKendree to a doubleheader sweep of the Pumas.
The win marked Yung's first collegiate victory, shutout and complete game. Yung has pitched in eight games with four starts to date, posting a 1-4 overall record with a 5.76 earned-run average. He leads the Bearcats' staff with 23 strikeouts.
McKendree will travel to Evansville, Ind., this weekend for a four-game GLVC series at the University of Southern Indiana. The Bearcats and Screaming Eagles will play a single game Friday evening and a doubleheader on Saturday before closing the series with a nine-inning contest Sunday afternoon.
