Cougars, Bearcats, Lynx all have tough day

Southeast Missouri got past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in a well-pitched game Saturday. The Redhawks defeated the Cougars 4-0 in game two of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Capaha Field.

The Cougars fell to 4-19 overall and 2-9 in the OVC. Southeast Missouri has won nine straight games and improved to 19-8 overall and 11-0 in the OVC.

Southeast Missouri righthander Clay Chandler twirled a four-hit shutout, striking out 11 Cougars hitters. He moved to 4-0 with the win.

SIUE starter Jarett Bednar (0-6) tossed seven innings in the start for SIUE. He allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out three.

Southeast Missouri scored single runs in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Second baseman Trevor Ezell was 3 for 4 and drove home two for the Redhawks.

Keaton Wright, a Triad graduate, was 2 for 4 and the only SIUE player with more than a single hit. Brock Weimer was 1 for 3 with a double.

The Cougars will look to avoid the sweep Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Bellarmine 7-2, McKendree 6-0

The McKendree University baseball team dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturdayafternoon at Bellarmine University. A late rally by the Bearcats came up just short in a 7-6 loss in game one before the host Knights posted a 2-0 shutout victory in the nightcap at Louisville, Ky.

McKendree moves to 10-15 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Bearcats and Knights (11-13, 3-3 GLVC) will close out their four-game weekend series Sunday afternoon with another twinbill that starts at 11 a.m. CDT.

Senior infielder Adam Kunkel (Red Bud) went 4-for-4 in game one and scored a pair of runs to help show the way for McKendree. Junior catcher Chris Deaville chipped in with two hits and a pair of RBIs against the Knights, while freshman infielder Luke Johnson also drove in two runs in the contest.

Game two played out as a pitcher’s duel between left-handers Hunter Spencer of Bellarmine and senior Josh Tonozzi for McKendree. Both hurlers went the distance in the seven-inning contest as the host Knights scratched out single runs in the third and fifth innings to hang on for the sweep. Tonozzi took the hard-luck defeat, scattering seven hits in his six innings on the day. He allowed two earned runs and walked two batters. Spencer tossed a complete-game three-hitter for Bellarmine.

Park 17, LU-Belleville 13

High winds played a huge role in the numbers on the final box score between the Lindenwood University-Belleville and Park University baseball teams, but despite holding an 11-10 lead in the seventh, the Pirates stormed back for the 17-13 win Saturday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget.

A total of 30 runs, 34 hits and 10 errors were committed. With the high winds, outfielders on both teams struggled to pick a spot where the ball might end up, while on the infield, the ball would sail away from infielders who thought they were making routine throws to first.

The Lynx (10-29; 4-11 AMC), trailed 10-5 going into the bottom of the seventh. LU-Belleville scored six runs on four hits and were helped out by four Pirates (20-12; 9-6 AMC) errors to take an 11-10 lead.

But in the eighth though, Park scored seven runs on seven hits.

LU-Belleville will look to snap its 10-game losing streak Wednesday in a nonconference game against Culver-Stockton College.

The first pitch for the contest will be thrown at 4 p.m. The teams will play one nine-inning game.
