Waterloo sweeps East
Two close games both went to the Waterloo Bulldogs (1-2) outlasted Belleville East Lancers (0-3) in two close sets Thursday, 25-18 and 25-22.
The Lancers will play Mascoutah (0-2) on September 5 at 4:30 p.m. before beginning conference play against East St. Louis (3-1) on September 7 at 4:30 p.m. Waterloo will look to set Columbia (4-1) off their three game win streak on September 7 at 5:30 p.m.
West opens with win over Triad
Belleville West’s first game of the season to Triad was successful as the Maroons claimed the match in three sets with scores of 25-20, 22-25, and 25-18.
West (1-0) will host Freeburg (3-0) on September 5 at 4:30 p.m. Triad (0-2) will begin a seven game travel against another Southwestern conference team, O’Fallon (2-0), on September 6 at 5 p.m.
East St. Louis dominates at tournament
East St. Louis dominated in New Athens/Marissa Tournament. Although picking up a loss from the hosts, the Flyers got their first win of the tournament a few hours later against First Baptist Academy on Tuesday, 21-7 and 21-10.
They then faced Pickneyville and won the match after two games with both scores being 21-19. East Side wrapped up the tournament by defeating Gibault 21-18 and 22-20, and Red Bud 21-15, 21-16, and 21-16.
East St. Louis (4-1) looks to continue its winning streak at Quincy (3-1) on Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. Gibault (3-4) heads to Althoff on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. Red Bud (6-2) will travel to Valmeyer on Sept. 6 at 6:15 p.m.
O’Fallon knocks off Missouri foe
O’Fallon continues to claim matches in pairs with a 25-22 and 26-24 win over Villa Duchesne.
The Panthers will take on three teams in the Tiger Classic Tournament held by Edwardsville over the weekend. Although the Panthers will not meet the hosts they will play Freeburg (3-0), Carlinville, and Francis Howell (4-0).
The Villa Duchesne Saints have not been able to be on the winning side of the court since their first match against Oakville on September 23.
Althoff starts season 3-0 with win
The Crusaders extend their win streak to three with a 2-0 victory over Marion. Althoff defeated Marion with scores of 25-21 and 25-17.
Althoff (3-0) returns home Sept. 5 to take on Gibault (3-4) at 5 p.m. while Marion (2-4) plays Sikeston (0-3) Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
Highland 2, Granite City 0
The Highland Bulldogs (2-0) defeated the Granite City Warriors (3-3) on Thursday night. The Bulldogs defeated the Warriors 25-14, 25-10. Highland will hit the road for the next two weeks and will first take on Central (0-1) on September 7 at 6 p.m.
Granite City currently tops the Southwestern standings with the closest school being East St. Louis with a 2-1 record. The Warriors will face a nonconference match against Civic Memorial (4-3) on September 5 at 6:15 p.m.
