Unassisted hat trick gives Columbia nonconference win over Granite City

Riley Huber’s unassisted hat trick led Columbia to a 5-1 victory over Granite City on Wednesday.

The Eagles (7-0-1) started off the game strong with three goals in the first half and did not let up on Granite City (0-6), scoring another two in the second. Keegan O’Bryan and Jake Bridges also scored for Columbia.

The Eagles will play a nonconference road game against Lebanon (2-3) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Warriors will play Sacred Heart-Griffin (3-3) 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Wesclin scores first win against Centralia

Wesclin beat Centralia 2-0 on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Bernie Thiebeau played the full 80 minutes, getting the solo shutout on one save.

Trent Calvert scored on a goal assisted by Luis Gonzalez, and Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal on an assist by Calvert. Both boys picked up three points in the game.

Both teams will face difficult opponents in their next games. Centralia (1-3) will play undefeated Mascoutah (8-0) at 4:15 p.m. Friday. Wesclin will host Columbia (7-0-1) at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Freeburg defeats Wood River 4-0

Freeburg defeated Wood River 4-0 on Wednesday, led by goalie Greg Cockrell.

Cockrell made five saves in goal and earned the solo shutout against the Oilers (2-5).

Noah Williams scored two goals and assisted on a third. Camden Beliveay and Bly Range each scored for the Midgets (4-4). Range also notched an assist. Nine Midgets had a shot on goal throughout the game.

Freeburg travels to Metro-East Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for their next game. The Oilers will face Lebanon at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Waterloo rolls over CM

Waterloo beat Civic Memorial 8-0 on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs were led by Justin Kohler, who had a hat trick and an assist.

Jake Elsing and Caden Gordon each had two goals and one assist for Waterloo. Derek Young added a goal for the Bulldogs (4-5). Tate Schilling lead with two assists. The other three came from Devin Biffar, Hayden Reese and goalkeeper Sam Ward.

Ward split the shutout while grabbing his first win of the season. Gavin Spytek played 15 of the 80 minutes.

Waterloo will face a difficult Mississippi Valley Conference game against Mascoutah (8-0) at 4:15 p.m. Thursday. Civic Memorial will play McCluer North (0-3) at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
