Soccer team gets first Althoff victory at new Martz Stadium
The Althoff football team christened the new multi-sport stadium — the first on the Belleville school’s campus — on Friday. Saturday, the soccer team earned the first victory at George Martz Field.
Althoff got goals from three different players in a 3-0 shutout of Mater Dei Saturday.
Stone Galloway, Joshua Mark and Nathan Petry all found the back of the net, while Mitchell Kidd added an assist. Ethan Haege earned the shutout in goal for the Crusaders. Nathan Kuhl took the loss for Mater Dei despite his five saves.
The Crusaders improved to 7-6-1 on the season and will face Belleville East Monday. Mater Dei, 9-7, takes on Waterloo at home Monday.
Highland soccer gets win
An Andrew Roach goal was all the Highland Bulldogs needed to defeat Marion 1-0 in high school soccer Saturday.
Roach was assisted by Bryce Smith, while Riley Fields earned the shutout in goal.
The Bulldogs (5-8-1) are at home against Civic Memorial Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.
Gibault rallies early
The Gibault Hawks scored seven first-half goals in an 8-0 win over Metro-East Lutheran in high school soccer.
The 9-4-2 Hawks next play at Belleville East Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Cross Country
Waterloo wins Freeburg Invite
Mater Dei’s Luke Goebel won the individual title at the Freeburg Cross Country Invitational Saturday, but the Waterloo Bulldogs were team champions.
Jackson McAllister, Adam Robson and Eli Ward finished the short course within three seconds of each other, placing in third, fourth and fifth place respectively. Goebel finished in 15:59 with the Waterloo trio just 16 seconds behind.
Twenty-one Southern Illinois teams participated. Rounding out the top five teams were Triad, Belleville East, Freeburg and Mater Dei.
The top 10 individuals were Goebel; Austin Knight of Carterville (16:10); McAllister (16:15); Robson (16:16); Ward (16:18); Garrett Johnson, Pinckneyville (16:26); Hayden Wimberly (16:30) and Dawson Webster (16:30) of Salem; Zach Panek of Belleville East (16:42); and Blake Hatter of Freeburg (16:45).
Triad girls pace Freeburg field
Triad put four runners in the top 10 as the Knights claimed the team title at the Freeburg Cross Country Invitational Saturday.
Freeburg’s Breanna Chandler was the individual champion in a time of 18:50.
For Triad, Maddi Keller (19:42), Alyssa Kowalski (19:57), Sydney Hartoin (20:18) and Madeline Walter (20:26) were top 10 finishers.
Others included Ella King of Waterloo (19:16); Madelyn Tepe of Okawville (19:40); Cholee Phillips of Salem (20:07); Abbey Riechmann of Okawville (20:19) and Tiffani Siekmann of Althoff (20:24).
Behind team champion Triad were, in order of their finish, Waterloo, Freeburg, Mater Dei, Okawville, Pinckneyville, Salem, Chester, Breese Central, Carterville, Columbia, Valmeyer and Metro-East Lutheran.
Tennis
East girls win again
The rolling Belleville East girls tennis team blanked Quincy in seven matches Saturday.
Isabel Burwitz, Lauren Cowulich, Susan Shin and Kaylyn DeVecchio earned singles wins.
Maddy Hamilton and JoJo Skaer earned the win at No.1 doubles; Chloe and Abigail McIsaac were winners at No. 2 doubles; and Caroline Smith and Maddie Buschur won at No. 3 doubles.
