Althoff boys soccer sharp in regional debut; Clinton County teams also advance

Althoff senior Tyler Stone and junior Mitchell Kidd scored two goals each as the Crusaders defeated Greenville 5-1 Tuesday in a semifinal soccer game at the Class 1A Greenville Regional.

Leading just 1-0 at halftime, Althoff (9-10-3) broke loose for four second-half goals to coast to the win. Jack Pusa added a goal for Althoff, which will take on Wesclin in the title game at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Wesclin 4, Roxana 0

The fourth-seeded Wesclin Warriors got their high-powered offense going in the second half as they blanked Roxana 4-0 at the Greenville regional.

Senior Trent Calvert scored his team-leading 31st goal of the season to lead the Warriors (9-10-1), who also received goals from Guilherme Fonseca, Mytchel Kuhl and Garrett Wesselmann.

Central 8, Carlyle 0

Senior Lucas Wobbe scored four goals Tuesday as top-seeded Central crushed Cahokia Conference rival Carlyle 8-0 at the Class 1A Central Regional. The Cougars (15-2-1), who defeated Carlyle 2-0 last week, also received a pair of goals from Ignacio Pedetti Roig as they advanced to the title game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Cougars will play the winner of the game between Mount Carmel and Valmeyer, which will be played at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Mater Dei 2, Massac County 1

The second-seeded Knights got a scare but prevailed over eighth-seeded Massac County 2-1 at the Class 1A Harrisburg Regional. Ethan Dierhake and Banco Lo scored goals for Mater Dei (13-9-1), which will take on either Freeburg or Murphysboro for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Freeburg-Murphysboro game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
