O’Fallon, Althoff spikers reach milestones as tennis players head to state
O’Fallon senior outside hitter Elise Smith joined some elite company on Tuesday when she picked up kill No. 1,000 of her four career during the Panthers 25-18, 25-18 win over East St. Louis.
The 6-foot Smith has 335 kills this season and is ranked third in the St. Louis area with an average of 4.79 kills per game. Smith will attend NCAA Division II Caldwell University in Caldwell, NJ. next year.
Comerford picks up assist No. 2,000
Althoff senior setter Louise Comerford collected assist No. 2,000 of her career during the Crusaders 25-16, 25-18 win over O’Fallon on Wednesday. A Miami of Ohio University recruit, Comerford had 28 assists on Wednesday and now has 575 assists for the season for Althoff (34-1).
Freeburg earns own tournament title
The Freeburg Midgets continued their late season surge by winning their own Freeburg Volleyball Tournament title on Saturday, defeating Teutopolis 25-21, 15-21, 15-13 in the title match. The Midgets (25-8) then ran their winning streak to nine straight matches by defeating Gibault 25-17, 25-23 on Wednesday.
Sophomore Caroline Gagen leads the Midgets in kills with 181 while senior Maddie Hurd (176 kills) and sophomore Lexi Smith (137) have also been solid for coach Brooke Kloess’ team.
Althoff trio wins sectional titles
Althoff junior Jordyn Roper won the singles title and Crusaders teammates Mary Nester and Olivia Melichar won the doubles championship at the Class 1A Triad Tennis Sectional. All three are competing in the IHSA Girls State Tennis Tournament which began on Thursday in suburban Chicago.
Deatherage leads Triad into Class 2A Sectional final
Triad senior forward Jaden Deatherage scored the goal of the game as the Knights upset Mascoutah 1-0 in the semi-finals of the Class 2A Mascoutah Soccer Regional on Wednesday. The goal was the 19th of the season for Deatherage who leads the Knights with 43 points.
