Big hits, kicks and jumps
O’Fallon senior Will VanAlstine used a strong kick to outlast Casmir Cozzi of Mascoutah in the 1,600 meter final and clinch the team title at the St. Clair County Track and Field Meet Tuesday at Belleville West High School.
In a battle of premiere distance runners, VanAlstine finished with a time of 4 minutes 31 seconds, two seconds in front of Cozzi who had a time of 4:33.
The win by VanAlstine, along with victories by Dorian Brown in the 100 meters (11.0 seconds) and Christian Wallace in the 400 meters (50.5 seconds) helped O’Fallon finish with 153 points, 15 more than perennial state power East St. Louis. The Flyers finished with 138 points.
Belleville East finished a distant third with 97 1/2 points.
VanAlstine was also a member of the Panthers’ 3,200-meter relay team. O’Fallon also won the 1,600 meter relay title.
East St. Louis received wins from Elijah Felton in the triple jump (42 feet 11 inches), Andrew Johnson in the 300 meter hurdles (38.4 seconds) and Marcus Lampley in the 200 meters. (22.2 seconds).
Winning individual championships for third place Belleville East were Trison Paul in the pole vault (13 feet 8 inches), Josh Suttles in the discus (148 feet 11 inches) and Elijah McCauley in the long jump (21 feet 1 inch).
Other individual winners included Zack Pluff of Freeburg in the high jump (6 feet 5 inches), Mascoutah’s Matt Wilson in the shot put (50 feet 5 inches) and Cozzi in the 3,200 meters (10 minutes 11 seconds), Steve Harris of Cahokia in the 110 meter hurdles (14.5 seconds) and Camden Sadler of Althoff in the 800 meters (2 minutes 00.3 seconds).
