Poll results: Here’s the high school girls basketball player of the week in southwest Illinois

Norah Gum of Waterloo High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Girls Player of the Week high school basketball poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.

In recent high school basketball games, Gum, a junior forward, scored 37 points in a regional win against Mascoutah and 18 points in a loss against Triad in the regional championship game. Gum finished the season averaging 18.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Gum tallied 58% of the votes to finish ahead of Sophie Loden of Mascoutah High School, who secured 39% of the votes. Other BND nominees included Shannon Dowell of O’Fallon High School, Octavia Heidelberg of Dupo High School, Kailynn Kruep of Mater Dei High School, Shakara McCline of East St. Louis High School and Maliah Sparks of Belleville West High School. The poll ended at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
