Breese Central remains perfect, Collinsville hands East St. Louis first loss of season

Friday night saw another full slate of boys basketball games at metro-east gyms.

Here is a brief recap of some of the key games.

East St. Louis at Collinsville

The Kahoks knocked the Flyers from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 38-37 Southwestern Conference victory.

Collinsville improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SWC while the East St. Louis dropped to 5-1, 1-1.

Look ahead: The Kahoks host Granite City at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Flyers host Belleville West at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the gym on the former Belleville West and Lindenwood Belleville campus (which is now called the Southwestern Illinois Justice and Workforce Development Campus”). The East St. Louis boys team is playing their home games there as the arena and locker rooms at the high school are being upgraded, until at least February. The girls team, meanwhile, is playing at Mason Clark Middle School.

Granite City at Belleville West

The Warriors posted a 52-45 victory against the Maroons in a non-conference game while upping their ledger to 4-3. Belleville West dropped to 4-3.

Look ahead: Granite City next plays at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at home against McCluer. West next plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at McCluer North.

Alton at O’Fallon

The Panthers rolled to a 74-44 victory against the Redbirds to improve to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Southwestern Conference. Alton fell to 1-5, 0-3.

O’Fallon’s Koby Wilmoth scored a game-high 24 points, while Jaeden Rush added 11 points and Isaiah Camper posted 10 points. Blake Hall and Jamion Everage each scored 12 points for Alton.

Look ahead: The Panthers resume action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Mascoutah. The Redbirds next play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Belleville East.

Althoff at Mount Vernon

The Crusaders fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the South Seven Conference following a 71-49 loss to the Rams.

Look ahead: Althoff resumes action at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at home against Carbondale

Salem at Columbia

The Eagles coasted to a 62-32 victory to improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference.

Leading 26-14 at halftime, Columbia ended all doubt outscoring the Wildcats 23-8 in the third quarter. The Eagles’ Dylan Murphy scored a game high 31 points, while Sam Donald chipped in 10 points.

Look ahead: Columbia resume action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at home against Steeleville.

Wood River at Freeburg

The Midgets remained perfect at 2-0 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference with a 75-55 victory against the Oilers.

Freeburg, led by 22 points from Cole Stuart and 20 from Lane Otten, improved to 4-3 overall. Caleb Weber added 12 points in the win. Wood River is 2-7, 0-2.

Look ahead: Both teams resume action Tuesday, Dec. 13, as the Midgets host Waterloo at 7 p.m. and the Oilers visit Red Bud at 7:30 p.m.

Roxana at Breese Central

The Cougars had little trouble remaining undefeated, rolling past the Shells 54-18.

Breese Central is now 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference. Roxana is 4-5, 0-2.

Look ahead: Both teams are back in action Tuesday, Dec. 13, as the Cougars visit Civic Memorial at 7:30 p.m. and the Shells host SIUE Charter at 7:30 p.m.

Mascoutah at Waterloo

The Indians improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mississipp Valley Conference with a 57-48 victory against the Bulldogs, who dropped to 1-4, 0-2.

Jayden McCoo led Mascoutah with 14 points and Corey Harris added 13 points.

Look ahead: Both teams resume action Tuesday, Dec. 13, as Waterloo visits Freeburg at 7 p.m. and Mascoutah hosts O’Fallon at 7:30 p.m.

Triad at Civic Memorial

The Knights improved to 2-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference and 7-2 overall following a 46-37 win against the Eagles. CM is 3-4, 0-2.

Drew Winslow led Triad with 17 points, while Tyler Thompson chipped in 13 points.

Look ahead: The Eagles host Breese Central at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13. Triad entertains Highland at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16.

Jerseyville at Highland

The Panthers edged the Bulldogs 61-59 in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest.

Ayden Kanallakan had 21 points for Jerseyville, which improved to 5-3, 2-0. Tanner Brunaugh contributed 15 points.

Jake Ottensmeier scored 16 points for Highland, which fell to 4-3, 0-2. Grant Fleming added 13 points. Highland outscored Jerseyville 24-13 in the fourth quarter to nearly wipe out a 13-point deficit.

Look ahead: Both teams resume action Tuesday, Dec. 13, as Jerseyville visits Staunton at 6 p.m. and Highland hosts Litchfield at 7 p.m.

Mater Dei idle

The Knights were off Friday night and were coming off a 62-54 road loss to Althoff on Tuesday.

Look ahead: Mater Dei hosts Belleville East at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Other notable games

  • Wesclin defeated Red Bud 46-42 in a Cahokia Conference game (Illinois Division). The Warriors are 6-2, 1-0; The Musketeers are 5-2, 0-1. Seth Macke led Wesclin with 12 points. Wesclin hosts Sparta at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, while Red Bud faces Wood River.
  • Gibault improved 4-2 following a 59-51 home win against Pinckneyville. Kaden Augustine led the Hawks with 15 points, while Hudson Blank and Kameron Hanvey eached notched 9 points. Gibault visits Fox at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13.
  • Cahokia dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the South Seven Conference following a 69-61 road loss to Centralia. The Comanches will face Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13.
