The Class 3A Herrin Volleyball Sectional championship match scheduled for Thursday between Mascoutah and Columbia has been moved to Belleville West High School.
The sectional title match is set for 7 p.m.
“Both athletic directors got together and thought it would be more beneficial for the student-athletes and the fans to play at closer neutral site instead of us both driving down south,” Mascoutah coach Todd Gober said. “We thought we could make it more conducive for teams, fans and friends to experience this growing rivalry.
“I think we’ll get some more fans from the area this way. It’s nice to have two local teams battling for a sectional championship.”

Mascoutah defeated Columbia in three sets at the Mascoutah Tournament, winning 21-25, 25-23, 15-8. The teams have taken turns knocking each other out of the playoffs the past two seasons.
“There’s a growing rivalry between our two school,” Gober said. “We’re not in the same conference but we continue to meet each other in the playoffs. It’s fun to have rivalries.”
