After pulling off an upset win over Mahomet-Seymour just four days ago, the Cahokia Comanches met their match on Saturday at the Class 2A Dual Team State Wrestling Tournament.
Central Illinois power Washington ran off a string of five pins in six matches early and never looked back as it ended the Comanches season with a 43-27 setback in the quarterfinal round at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.
Making its seventh appearance in the state finals and looking for its second trophy in three years after placing fourth in ‘14, the Comanches split the first two matches with the third-ranked Panthers.
With the match starting at the 220-pound weight class, Washington (23-6) won the first match but when Cahokia’s Aaron Mimbes rallied for a 3-2 win over Will Hammer in the 285-pound match, the score was tied at 3.
But the Comanches would not win again until Martell Boone defeated Caleb Miller 9-8 in the 152-pound match to make the score 43-6 in favor of the Panthers.
The Class 2A state tournament runnerup a year ago, Washington took a 7-3 lead when Trey Keeley scored a major decision win over Tyshon Davis 10-0 in the 106 pound match. Seconds later when Dax Punke pinned Devin Moore in 3 minutes 15 seconds at 113 pounds, the rout was on as Washington scored four more pins and added a win by forfeit to put the match away.
Washington is making its third appearance in the state finals.
With the match decided following the 145-pound weight class, Cahokia won the last four individual matches. Daniel Dunrley defeated Manny Plata 2-0 in the 152-pound match and Darius Frazier (170), Derell Hinkle (182) and Zachariah Al-Khamoas (195) all won by forfeit.
