Game Balls: Top performances from the week in high school sports
Marvin Bateman
Althoff, Boys Basketball
One of the top perimeter shooters in the metro-east, Bateman was automatic as he connected on 7-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line, scoring 21 points in leading Althoff past Mount Vernon 101-63 in a semifinal round game at the Class 3A Highland Sectional.
Brian Deterding
Gibault, Boys Basketball
The senior center missed his first two shots before hitting on eight in a row to lead Gibault with 17 points against Liberty in the Class 1A Jacksonville Super-Sectional. Unfortunately, Deterding’s effort came in a losing cause. The Hawks, who earned a surprise sectional championship by beating state-ranked Okawville just five days earlier, fell to Liberty, 41-37.
Jordan Goodwin
Althoff, Boys Basketball
The premier Class 3A player in southern Illinois, Goodwin was nothing short of brilliant as he scored 32 points and helped carry Althoff past Centralia 67-53 in the title game of the Class 3A Highland Sectional. Goodwin also totaled 20 points in the Crusaders 101-63 win over Mount Vernon earlier in the week.
Jonathan Holmes
Columbia, Boys Basketball
Holmes was one of the few bright spots for the Eagles on Wednesday as he scored 13 points in a 59-37 loss to Centralia in the semifinals of the Class 3A Highland Sectional. The Eagles, who advanced to sectional play for the first time since the ‘11 season, finished 22-7.
Logan Kohrmann
Central, Boys Basketball
The Cougars’all-state senior helped spin the disappointment of a Class 2A state semifinal loss into a determined third-place finish by scoring a game-high 31-points in a win over Hales Franciscan Saturday. With his performance — during which he shot 11-for-19 from the field with three 3-pointers — Kohrmann’s high school career ends as one of the best in Central history. His 1,645 career points is second only to another former all-stater, Brandon Book. Kohrmann also had scored 22 in Friday’s semifinal loss.
