Edwardsville, Collinsville settle for a draw
COLLINSVILLE
The Collinsville Kahoks and Edwardsville Tigers renewed their soccer rivalry on a cold and wet night on Thursday at Collinsville High School. But in the end nothing was settled.
Abigail Crabtree of Edwardsville and Collinsville sophomore midfielder Emma Knoebel scored goals in the first 20 minutes, but defense and missed scoring opportunities were the story the rest of the way as the two Southwestern Conference powers fought to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
Crabtree, who had her first shot of the night hit off the crossbar just 62 seconds of the game, beat Kahoks goalie Morgan Lerch from point blank range with 27 minutes 16 serconds remaining in the first half. That lead didn’[t last long as less than eight minutes later, Knoebel snuck the ball past Windau to tie the game.
Knoebel’s goal came after Windau had made several outstanding saves — including three against the Kahoks Emily Holton — in the first 10 minutes of the game.
“Regan was brilliant tonight. She made several diving saves, especially early in the gamer,’’ Tigers coach Abby Comerford said. “This was a typical Collinsville-Edwardsville game early in the season. The conditions were cold and windy, but I was pleased at how the girls played. Our defense really played well tonight. All four of them. They really stuck together.’’
