Jayln Richardson scores two goals as Collinsville overpowers Belleville West
After absorbing its first defeat of the season Saturday, the Collinsville High girls soccer team wasn’t eager to relive the experience.
Jalyn Richardson came off the bench to score two goals, while Andrea Frerker, Emily Holten and Riley Harris scored one apiece Tuesday as the Kahoks overwhelmed Belleville West 5-1 in a Southwestern Conference game.
Frerker, a junior, broke a scoreless tie and put the Kahoks ahead for good in the first half. Richardson, a sophomore, followed with her two goals in a span of 1 minute, 9 seconds, to give Collinsville a 3-0 lead in the second half.
“It’s nice to have a player like Jalyn come off the bench,” Kahoks coach Clay Smith said. “She’s (been) improving all year long. She’s starting to figure out the pace of the play.
“I think that was her biggest problem. The first couple of games were just really fast-paced games for her. She’s starting to correct her runs and reading them a little before it happens, and she’s starting to have some success.”
Richardson has a team-leading five goals this season, including three in her last two games.
Collinsville’s a good team. They’ve got some good players. (Andrea) Frerker is a world to deal with. So is (Emily) Holten. Those are two bodies that are very strong on the ball. And as strong physically as they are, it’s tough to deal with.

Collinsville, which lost to Visitation 2-1 on Saturday, improved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SWC. The Kahoks are tied with Edwardsville for first place in the league. The Tigers kept pace Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over host Belleville East.
West, whose only goal was scored by fleet-footed sophomore Taylor Mathenia late in the second half, fell to 4-3-2 and 1-2.
“Collinsville’s a good team,” Maroons coach Jason Mathenia said. “They’ve got some good players. Frerker is a world to deal with. So is Holten. Those are two bodies that are very strong on the ball. And as strong physically as they are, it’s tough to deal with.”
Key moments
Collinsville enjoyed the better of the play in the first half, but was kept off the board by the plucky Maroons defense until Frerker found an opening.
Frerker collected the ball at her feet and was unmarked from about 28 yards out when she rocketed a shot past West keeper Bailey Redden at 27:42.
She’s a complete package. She’s having a great year so far. She’s a handful in the middle of the field. She’s our leader in there. When she gets the ball on her foot going forward, it’s a hard thing to stop. She’s finds spots and makes everybody around her much better.

“She’s a complete package. She’s having a great year so far,” Smith said of Frerker, who has three goals and three assists this season. “She’s a handful in the middle of the field. She’s our leader in there. When she gets the ball on her foot going forward, it’s a hard thing to stop. She’s finds spots and makes everybody around her much better.”
Mathenia bemoaned Frerker’s goal, realizing how important it would likely be to the outcome of the game.
“Somebody has to take responsibility and step up and say, ‘I go ball,’ and put pressure on her,” Mathenia said. “Everybody assumed that somebody else was going to do it. We just kept backing off, backing off, and you give a player like that an opportunity to shoot a ball from 20, 25 yards out ... She hit it just inside the post. It was a good shot.”
Richardson made it 2-0 at 54:34. Frerker crossed to junior Tayler Devine, whose shot was deflected by Redden to Richardson, who finished the tap-in from a few feet in front. Richardson made it 3-0 at 55:43, scoring from the right side. Frerker fed Holten for a goal at 74:32 as the Kahoks widened their lead to 4-0.
Taylor Mathenia made a long run with the ball against two Kahoks defenders and was rewarded with a goal that made it 4-1 at 77:13. Mathenia, however, was then dropped to the turf on a nasty collision with Collinsville goalie Julie Scheiter.
Harris concluded Collinsville’s scoring, converting from deep in the box at 78:52 after a strong flip throw by senior defender Chayse Richardson.
The Kahoks’ five goals were a season-high. They also were the most allowed in a game this season by the Maroons.
Red-carded
Jason Mathenia received a yellow card and then a red card for arguing with the referee following the collision between Taylor Mathenia, the coach’s daughter, and Scheiter.
“I didn’t feel that was by any way, any means, a 50-50 ball,” Jason Mathenia said. “We’re going to watch this over and over on film. I did not feel (Scheiter) even remotely tried to go after the ball. It was clearly after the body.
“I don’t feel the referee even addressed that issue whatsoever. I think that’s very wrong. The referee didn’t even want to discuss to me his thoughts about it. He just wants to pull out cards.”
Jason Mathenia didn’t immediately know the condition of Taylor, who received assistance as she walked to the Maroons’ bench.
