After chasing the O’Fallon Panthers for much of the 2016 girls track and field season, the East St. Louis Flyerettes caught and passed the Southwestern Conference champions on Friday at Rock Island High School.
Freshman Shonjahnea Griggs won the 800 meters while Flyerettes teammates Evangeline Harris and Jazzmine Poole also won titles as East St. Louis posted a three-point win over O’Fallon on Friday at the Class 3A Rock Island Girls Track and Field Sectional.
Harris won the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 3 inches while Poole won the discus with an effort of 140 feet, 7 inches to lead the way for the Flyerettes who won the 1,600 meter relay and advanced nine entries in all to the state finals which will be held May 20-21 at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.
O’Fallon, which advanced 10 entries to Charleston, was led by wins in the 400 and 800 meter relays and from Brooke Witzel in the 3,200 meters and Kersten Douglas in the 200 meters.
East St. Louis edged the Panthers 90-87 for the team championship on Friday.
Alton, which placed third in the team race with 64 points, had the top individual performance on the night at senior Lajarvia Brown took the title in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles as well as the long jump and triple jump. Redbirds teammate Katie Manns won the high jump.
Belleville East and Belleville West will also be making trips to Charleston next week. Belleville West junior Kameron Frazier won the 400 meters in a time of just over 58 seconds while freshman Kelvi Searcy advanced in the 100 meter hurdles. West also advanced in the 400 meter relay.
Belleville East senior Tamar Mosby made sure retiring coach Bryan Mitchell will get one more trip to Charleston. Maosy advanced in the high jump.
Granite City advanced Andrea Hyde qualified for the state finals in the 100 meters and is a member of the Warriors 400 and 800 meter relay teams which advanced.
Class 1A Sparta Sectional
Lebanon junior Casey Berberich qualiified for the Class 1A State Track Meet in three events while Red Bud senior Keri Burmester won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters to lead the way for local athletes at the Class 1A Sparta Sectional on Friday.
Berberich qualified in the long jump, triple jump and 300 meter hurdles, while Burmester, a medal winner in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters a year ago, was among te local athltes winning sectional titles on Friday at Sparta High School.
Other local winners included Taylor Padak of Mater Dei in the high jump, Delphanae Griffin (triple jump) and Janiya Collins (100 meters) of Madison, and Mallory Unverferht (800 meters) of Okawville. Althoff’’s Epiphany Smith qualified by placing second in the 100 meters.
