Highland advances four to Class 2A State Track Meet

Thanks to four second place finishes at the Rochester Sectional on Friday, the Highland Bulldogs will be well represented at the Class 2A Girls State Track and Field Meet.

Junior Polly Czar hurled the shot put 36-feet-2-inches to claim the second place medal while Alyssa Freimann and Rece Portell also earned second place medals to lead Highland and earn trips to the state finals which begin on Thursday in Charleston.

Freimann placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 1 minute 2 seconds while Portell, a key member of the Highland girls basketball team which placed third in the Class 3A state finals, was second in the 800 meters with a time of just over 2 minutes 25 seconds.

Highland also earned a state finals bid in the 3,200 meter relay — placing second behind Rochester — in a time 9 minutes 47.4 seconds.

The 2016 IHSA Girls State Track Meet will begin at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston on Thursday with the Class 1A preliminaries. Class 2A and Class 3A preliminaries will be held on Friday with finals set in all three classes on Saturday.
