Like they did during the regular season and at sectional competition, the Edwardsville doubles team of Zach Trimpe and Alex Gray dominated their opponents during the first three rounds of play at the IHSA State Tennis Tournament on Thursday in suburban Chicago.
One week after winning the sectional title, Trimpe and Gray dropped only six games in scoring three straight set wins as they moved into the round of 16 which will played at 8 a.m. on Friday at Buffalo Grove High School.
Trimpe and Gray will take on Sebastien DesRoberts and Rohan Gupta of Glenbrook South High School. A win would move Trimpe and Gray into the quarterfinal round later on Friday. The duo is seeded in the top four of the doubles competition.
Gray and Trimpe are the lone remaining entry from the metro-east which enters the second day of play with a chance to win win a state title. Otherwise it was a tough day for local players as they competed against the top players in the state.
Edwardsville, which is currently in sixth place in the team competition with 14 points, also advanced singles player Erik Weiler into the second day. Weiler won three of four matches on Thursday. The only other local singles player still alive in the consolation bracket of the double elimination event is Mascoutah sophomore Andy Graf.
The sectional champion at the Belleville East event last week, Graf won his first two matches on Thursday before dropping a third round match.
The only other metro-east entry still alive in the consolation bracket are sectional champions Derek Henke and Drew Boyles of Belleville West. The Maroons pair won two of three matches on Thursday.
