Edwardsville girls win sectional title in OT
The No.1-ranked Edwardsville Tigers topped Rock Island 48-44 in overtime Thursday night to win the Class 4A Champaign Sectional championship.
Edwardsville now advances to the Bloomington super-sectional for the fourth straight year.
The Tigers were down 24-17 at halftime but used the break to regroup and came back to lead the Rocks by one at the end of the third quarter. A back-and-forth final quarter eventually brought Edwardsville to lead 41-38. But with 10 seconds remaining, Rock Island’s Chrislyn Carr hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 41 and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Tigers maintained a narrow lead until the final buzzer sounded, giving them the sectional title.
Three players scored in double figures for the Tigers: Myriah Noodel-Haywood (18 points), Rachel Pranger (14) and Kate Martin (10).
Postseason play has been a bumpy so far for the Tigers, who slipped by Belleville East 41-40 last week for the regional title.
Edwardsville hopes to top last year’s postseason performance. The 2016-2017 Tigers finished runners-up at state with a tough 41-40 loss to Geneva in the championship game.
Edwardsville (29-0) will play Mother McAuley on Monday in the Class 4A Bloomington Super-Sectional at Illinois Wesleyan University.
