Former O’Fallon, McKendree standout hits ground running as Mascoutah softball coach

After growing up wearing the blue and gold of O’Fallon High School and spending the past five years as an assistant with the Panthers softball program, Morgan Curry is moving on.

And the new head softball coach at Mascoutah High School can’t wait to get started.

Officially named as the Indians coach a week ago following the resignation of Frank Evans earlier this summer, Curry, 27, is already well established in her new home town.

A graduate of McKendree University, Curry is a seventh grade math teacher at Mascoutah Middle School and takes over an Indians program which has been among the youngest in the Mississippi Valley Conference the past two years.

“I have just completely fallen in love with this town,” Curry said. “I teach here, I’m living here and I just really love the people here. I’m totally excited about this opportunity.

“I am just excited to see what we can do. Mascoutah has a lot of talent right now, and for the last couple of years, it’s been very young talent. Now, I’m looking forward to seeing what these girls can do now that they’ve played together and have some experience.”

Evans, a longtime coach at Mascoutah, resigned as softball coach after eight years to become the Indians head girls basketball coach.

Mascoutah Athletic Director Scott Battas said Curry is an energetic person who comes from winning programs.

“Morgan has grown up around the game and has had success both playing the sport at the college level, and coaching both in the club circuit, and as the varsity hitting coach at O’Fallon last year. O’Fallon’s hitting statistics grew substantially under her guidance, as they were a sectional finalist a year ago. We were impressed by her organization plan and vision for the program,” Battas said.

“Coach Evans left some good pieces in place to build upon, as he put in a ton of time and effort toward the program over the past several years. The future is very bright for Mascoutah softball and we believe that coach Curry was the best choice when it came to moving the program forward. I am really excited to work with her and I know her players will be as well.”

Curry has plenty of softball experience to draw upon.

A 2010 graduate of O’Fallon where she played four years, Curry went on to play four years of college softball at McKendree and has spent the past five years as an assistant at O’Fallon.

New coach’s principles, goals

Like most coaches, Curry believes success begins with strong fundamentals.

“My goals for the program are to focus on the fundamentals and to be able to execute the mental side of softball as well,” Curry said. “I am someone who leads by example. I am a very positive person who wants to be there for her players and I want them to be there for each other.

“And I want to be able to help those players who want to go on to play college softball while making it a very positive experience for all of the girls who compete in our program.”
