New Athens’ Marlow is MaxPreps national player of the week
New Athens pitcher Abby Marlow was name the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Player of the Week for games played March 14 through 20.
Marlow had a role in all three of the Hornets' victories to start the season.
At the plate, she was 6-for-8 with two doubles and a home run, five RBIs and seven runs scored. From the pitcher's circle, she threw two complete-game shutouts. She allowed six hits and struck out 14 in 12 innings.
In a 15-0 win over Gibault Catholic, Marlow scattered four hits, struck out 10 while knocking in two runs for the Yellow Jackets to cap the weekend. Marlow went a combined 5 for 6 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and six runs scored during doubleheader sweep of Sparta.
Then, against Carlyle Wednesday, Marlow went 2-for-3 with another RBI and pitched seven full innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, but strike out eight against one walk.
Marlow led the Yellow Jackets to a 22-8 record and regional championship last season. She’s got New Athens off to a 4-0 start this year. So far, they’ve outscored their opponents by a combined score of 51-6.
Marlow has committed to play next season at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
