With Edwardsville’s 11-1 win over Jerseyville on Saturday, Tigers coach Tim Funkhouser became the youngest baseball coach in state history to reach 600 wins.
The 44-year-old Funkhouser is the 28th baseball Illinois baseball coach to get to 600 victories. In 18 seasons at Edwardsville High, the former Tigers’ shortstop has a 545-137 record that includes a 26-5 mark this spring.
Counting three seasons at Triad High, where his teams were 55-32, Funkhouser’s career coaching record is 600-169.
Since Funkhouser took over as Edwardsville’s coach in 1999, the Tigers have won 12 regionals, seven sectional and advanced to state five times. They finished second at the 2002 Class AA state tournament.
Funkhouser’s teams won 30 or more games in 10 of his first 17 seasons and the Tigers are in a streak of 37 consecutive seasons with 20 or more victories.
Funkhouser and Highland coach Joel Hawkins were inducted into the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame earlier this year.
