Boys basketball roundup: Collinsville, O’Fallon, Freeburg post victories
Here is a brief recap of Friday night’s boys basketball action.
Collinsville remains perfect, downs Edwardsville
The Kahoks outscored the Tigers 15-3 in the second quarter and rolled to a 47-29 Southwestern Conference road win.
Collinsville improved to 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the SWC. The Tigers dropped to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in league play. The score was tied 9-9 after a quarter before the Kahoks pulled away in the second period.
David Granger and Ray’Sean Tayloer led Collinsville with 16 points apiece. Brennan Weller paced Edwardsville with 10 points.
Next up: Collinsville plays Chicago Morgan Park at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Scott Credit Union Shootout at Edwardsville High School before hosting Alton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. Edwardsville hosts Althoff at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the shootout and then will entertain East St. Louis at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.
O’Fallon brushes aside early deficit to topple Ladue
The Panthers overcame a 17-7 deficit after a quarter to rally past visiting Ladue 56-42.
O’Fallon (6-1) outscored Ladue 16-4 in the second quarter to take a 23-21 lead at half. The Panthers then outscored the Rams 33-21 in the second stanza.
Drew Tebbe led the Panthers with 17 points, and Caleb Burton posted 11 points.
Next up: The Panthers host Centralia at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, before entertaining Belleville East at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.
Alton rallies past East St. Louis to post double OT verdict
The host Redbirds rallied for a 60-52 double overtime victory against the Flyers in a SWC battle.
Alton trailed 39-29 heading into the final quarter but outscored East St. Louis 20-10 to force overtime. Neither team scored in the first extra session, but the Redbirds (5-2 overall, 1-1 in the SWC) outscored the Flyers (3-4, 1-2) 11-3 in the second OT to prevail.
Macaleab Rich led East St. Louis with 15 points, while Armond Williams chipped in with 11 points.
Next up: East St. Louis visits Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17; the Redbirds face host Collinsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.
Marion takes down Althoff
Althoff dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the South Seven Conference following a 58-47 home loss to Marion.
Next up: The Crusaders play Edwardsville at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the shootout at Edwardsville and then are off until 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, when they face O’Fallon in the Collinsville Tournament.
Freeburg topples Carlyle
The Midgets led 16-4 after a quarter and ultimately posted a 58-44 home win against the Indians in the Cahokia Conference opener for both teams.
Freeburg improved to 4-1 overall, while Carlyle dropped to 3-3. The Midgets had three players in double figures, including Luke Ervie with 21 points, Jacob Blomenkamp with 19 points, and Colin Brueggeman with 11 points. Hayden Hoffmann led the Indians with 20 points.
Next up: Freeburg host Breese Central at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17; the Indians visit Vandalia at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, before hosting Altamont on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Granite City cruises past Columbia
The Warriors rolled to an 80-44 win against the Eagles.
Granite City improved to 5-2, while Columbia fell to 4-2. The Warriors led 40-22 at halftime and never looked back. Christian Jones led all scorers with 21 points, while Jahkeis Tippitt added 12 points and Marcus Peppers scored 10 points. Jackson Holmes paced the Eagles with 13 points.
Next up: The Eagles visit MICDS at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, before visiting Salem at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Warriors visit McCluer at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16.
Mascoutah rolls past Highland
The Indians opened Mississippi Valley Conference action with a decisive 86-34 win against visiting Highland.
Mascoutah improved to 4-2 overall, while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-6 overall, 1-1 in the MVC. Justin King led the Indians with 16 points, while Ryan LaJoy added 15 points, Cedric Rhodes scored 13 points, and Hunter Kehrer notched 10 points.
Next up: Mascoutah plays Clayton at noon Saturday, Dec. 14, at MICDS, before hosting Civic Memorial at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17; Highland is off until Saturday, Dec. 21, when it hosts Centralia at 6 p.m.
Triad secures win against Waterloo
The Knights moved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 67-43 road win against the Bulldogs (0-5, 0-2).
Luke Cox led Triad with 22 points, while Nate Winslow scored 13 points and Michael Tentis scored 10 points. Ty Lenhardt and and Jake Wade scored 11 points apiece for Waterloo.
Next up: Triad faces Carbondale at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the shootout at Edwardsville and then will host Roxana at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17; Waterloo hosts Perryville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Metro-East Lutheran defeats Gibault in OT
The Knights posted a 55-53 overtime road win against Gibault.
Metro-East Lutheran improved to 3-3, while the Hawks fell to 3-3. The game went to overtime at 42-42, but the Knights outscored the Hawks 13-11 in the extra session.
Ryan Bollinger led Gibault with 20 points, while Max Kostelac added 10 points.
Next up: Gibault faces Duchesne at MICDS at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, before traveling to Mater Dei at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. The Knights visit Piasa Southwestern at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Mater Dei off Friday, resumes action Saturday
Mater Dei (6-2) was off Friday, and will resume action at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, against O’Fallon Christian at MICDS. The Knights then host Gibault at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.
