Collinsville takes down De Smet at Highland Shootout; Mater Dei falls

Cawhan Smith did it again Saturday ... only this time De Smet High was the victims.

Smith hit a baseline 3-point jumper with 0.9 remaining in overtime as undefeated Collinsville rallied past De Smet to end the morning session at Highland High School.

Smith, who scored all eight of the Kahoks points in the extra four minute session, took a pass from senior all-state guard Ray’Sean Taylor, who penetrated the lane and dished the ball off to Smith, who for the second time this year hit a game-winning shot as time expired.

The 5-10 senior also beat O’Fallon with a buzzer beater to open the Southwestern Conference season..

“The play was for Ray’Sean to penetrate and create. He was going to take it to the basket if they (DeSmet) didn’t double down. They did and I was open,” Smith said. “ Teams leave me open because they think I can’t make the shot.

“I was just glad it went in.”

Taylor led Collinsville, ranked third in the Class 4A state poll, with 26 points while Smith added 17. Collinsville improves to 16-0 for the the season.

“I saw him (Smith) the whole time,” Taylor said. “As soon as I threw the pass I didn‘t even look — I knew.”
