Boys basketball recap: East St. Louis gets past East, Breese Central edges Freeburg

Edwardsville knocks off Belleville West

The Tigers improved to 15-7 overall and 2-4 in the Southwestern Conference with a solid 57-44 home win against the Maroons.

Tommie Williams led West (10-9, 2-4) with 15 points, and Keli’i Price added 12 points.

Next up: Edwardsville visits Gateway Stem at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. Belleville West plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the Bank of O’Fallon Shootout against the host Panthers.

East St. Louis slips past Belleville East

The Flyers overcame a 16-8 deficit after one quarter to post an impressive 58-54 Southwestern Conference road win against Belleville East.

East St. Louis improved to 15-7 overall, 5-3 in league action, while the Lancers dropped to 13-8, 2-5. Jashawn Anderson led the Flyers with 23 points, while Jabril Olivaria and Macaleab Rich posted 11 points apiece.

Next up: Both teams are playing in the Alton Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 1, as Belleville East faces Hazelwood East at 1 p.m. and East St. Louis plays Trinity at 7 p.m.

Althoff captures win at Centralia

The Crusaders went on the road and knocked off Centralia 40-29 in South Seven Conference action.

Althoff improved to 7-14, 2-4, while the Orphans dropped to 19-5, 4-2.

Next up: Centralia faces Freeburg at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Pinckneyville Shootout. Althoff hosts Belleville East at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Breese Central edges Freeburg in overtime thriller

The Cougars outlasted the visiting Midgets 49-47 in overtime in a Mississippi Division Cahokia Conference game.

Breese Central (10-12, 4-2) outscored Freeburg (18-6, 4-2) 5-3 in the extra session after rallying from a 38-34 deficit after three quarters. Luke Ervie led the Midgets with 13 points, while Colin Brueggeman posted 12 points.

Next up: Both teams play Saturday, Feb. 1, as Freeburg faces Centralia at 5 p.m. at the Pinckneyville Shootout and Breese Central hosts Highland at 6 p.m.

Okawville eases past Columbia

The Eagles dropped to 12-10 following a 47-35 non-conference road loss to Okawville.

Columbia led 24-20 at halftime, but Okawville (13-7) outscored the Eagles 16-3 in the third quarter to turn the tide.

Jackson Holmes led the Eagles with 18 points while Lucas Frederking posted a team-high 17 points for the Rockets.

Next up: Okawville visits Lebanon at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1., while Columbia hosts Civic Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Marissa rolls to win against Red Bud

The host Meteors led 15-7 after a quarter and 27-12 at halftime en route to a 50-31 win against the Musketeers.

Sebastion Ivory-Greer was one of three Marissa players in double figures, posting 17 points. Logan Jones added 14 points, and Blake Steinwagner notched 10 points. The Meteors improved to 17-5 overall and 7-1 in the Kaskaskia Division of the Cahokia Conference. The Musketeers dropped to 8-14, 3-4.

Next up: Red Bud hosts Gibault at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1. The Meteors face Barry Western at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Quincy Notre Dame.

Mascoutah takes down Triad

The host Indians improved to 11-10 overall and 3-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference with an exciting 56-55 win against the Knights.

Triad dropped to 16-7 overall, 4-1 in the MVC. Justin King anchored Mascoutah with 12 points, while Jacob Rudolphi and Braden Bryant collected 11 and 10 points, respectively. Nate Winslow led the Knights with 12 points, while Michael Tentis and Sam Yager each had 10 points.

Next up: Both teams resume action Tuesday, Feb. 4, as Triad hosts Gibault at 7:30 p.m. and Mascoutah visits Highland at 6 p.m.

Mater Dei off, to play at Pinckneyville

The Knights (18-5) were off Friday but will face Marion at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Pinckneyville Shootout. Mater Dei then visits St. Dominic at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4.
