Boys basketball roundup: Mater Dei, East St. Louis, Collinsville & East prevail

Here is a recap of the basketball action from Friday, Feb. 7. Records listed are as of completion of play Friday.

Mater Dei topples rival Breese Central

The host Knights led 31-20 at halftime and ultimately posted a 61-50 triumph against the Cougars.

Mater Dei improved to 21-5, while Breese Central dropped to 12-13. The Knights had three players in double figures, including Zach Napovanice (18 points), Jacob Schadegg (15 points) and Caleb Zurliene (11 points). The Cougars also had three players in double figures, with Bradon Thomas scoring 17 points, Jackson Haag posting 12 points and Emit Jansen collecting 11 points.

Next up: Mater Dei resumes action at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at home against Miller Career. Breese Central hosts Wesclin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Belleville East takes down Alton

The Lancers posted a solid 84-70 road Southwestern Conference win against the Redbirds.

Belleville East improved to 15-9 overall, 3-5 in league play, while Alton dropped to 11-4, 1-7.

Next up: The Lancers visit Granite City at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. The Redbirds host Collinsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14.

Collinsville collects victory against Granite City

The Kahoks posted a 51-48 road win against the Warriors.

Collinsville, which prevailed despite getting outscored 12-3 in the fourth quarter, improve to 24-1, while Granite City slipped to 11-11. Ray’Sean Taylor led the Kahoks with 18 points, while Keydrian Jones posted 13 points. Christian Jones paced the Warriors with 16 points, and Jahkeis Tippitt added 15 points.

Next up: Collinsville faces Chicago Simeon at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Bank of O’Fallon Shootout. Granite City hosts Belleville East on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

East St. Louis gets past Edwardsville

The Flyers notched an impressive 54-47 verdict against the host Tigers.

East St. Louis, led by 19 points from Macaleab Rich and 12 points from LaShawn Johnson, improved to 16-8 overall, 6-3 in the Southwestern Conference. Edwardsville dropped to 17-8, 3-5.

Next up: The Flyers face Urbana at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. The Tigers visit McKinley at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Freeburg falls at Salem

The Midgets dropped to 19-8 overall and 4-3 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference following a 56-52 loss to the Wildcats.

Next up: Freeburg visits Carlyle at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Althoff loses to Marion

The Crusaders suffered a 43-39 road loss to Marion, falling to 7-15 overall and 2-4 in the South Seven Conference.

Next up: Althoff hosts Cahokia at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Triad cruises past Waterloo

The host Knights led 40-27 at halftime against the Bulldogs and never looked back, rolling to a 77-53 Mississippi Valley Conference win.

Triad improved to 18-7 overall, 5-1 in the MVC. Waterloo is 11-15, 2-4.

Next up: Triad visits Columbia at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Waterloo hosts Columbia at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11.
