Boys basketball roundup: Belleville West, Collinsville, Mater Dei post victories

Here is a recap of Friday night’s metro-east basketball action. Records listed are as of completion of play Friday.

Belleville West posts big win against East St. Louis

The Maroons parlayed a huge second quarter into a strong 55-49 road win against the Flyers.

Belleville West trailed 12-7 after a quarter, but outscored East St. Louis 22-5 in the second quarter for a 29-17 lead. The Maroons rolled from there, improving to 13-10 overall and 4-5 in the Southwestern Conference. The Flyers dropped to 18-9, 6-4.

Greg Wells led Belleville West with 17 points, while Tommie Williams scored 16 points and Keli’i Price added 14 points. Armond Williams paced East St. Louis with 19 points, with Jashawn Anderson scoring 16 points and Jabril Olivaria notching 12 points.

Next up: West hosts Belleville East at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, while East St. Louis visits O’Fallon at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21.

Collinsville takes down Alton

The Kahoks used a big third quarter to cruise past the host Redbirds 69-46.

Leading just 30-25 at halftime, Collinsville outscored the Alton 21-6 in the third quarter to pull away. The Kahoks improved to 25-2 overall, 7-1 in the Southwestern Conference.. Alton fell to 11-15, 1-8.

Ray’Sean Taylor and Cawhan Smith led Collinsville with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Camren Edwards led Alton with 13 points, and teammate Andrew Jones scored 10 points.

Next up: The Kahoks host Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, while the Redbirds entertain Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21.

Edwardsville rolls past Mascoutah

The Tigers improved to 19-8 with a convincing 73-39 home win against the Indians, who dropped to 13-13.

Next up: Both teams resume action Tuesday, Feb. 18, as the Tigers visit Collinsville and the Indians host O’Fallon at 6 p.m.

Columbia posts win against Carlyle

The Eagles improved to 16-13 overall and 4-3 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference with a 58-45 home win against the Indians, who dropped to 8-20, 0-9.

Jackson Holmes led Columbia with 18 points, while Nic Horner scored 11 points and Jacob O’Connor posted 10 points. Carsen Beer and Jayden McIntosh each had 12 points for Carlyle.

Next up: The Eagles host Breese Central at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, while the Indians welcome Louisville (North Clay) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Freeburg secures victory against Wesclin

The Midgets upped their record to 20-8 overall and 6-3 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference with a 44-38 road win against the Warriors, who fell to 14-14, 5-4.

Next up: Both teams resume action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, as the Midgets host Triad and the Eagles entertain Columbia.

Mater Dei handles North Tech (Missouri)

The Knights led 27-10 after a quarter and 44-21 at halftime en route to an easy 89-29 home win against the Golden Eagles.

Mater Dei, which improved to 23-5, had four players in double figures, including Jacob Schadegg (13 points), Caleb Zurliene (12), Grant Goebel (11) and Mitchell Haake (11).

Next up: The Knights visit Civic Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Triad eases past Jerseyville

The Knights outscored the Panthers 17-9 in the third quarter en route to a solid 72-58 road win against the Panthers.

Triad improved to 20-7 overall, 6-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference, while Jerseyville — led by Tucker Shallley with 18 points and Matthew Jackson with 17 points — dropped to 15-11, 5-2.

Next up: The Panthers visit Teutopolis at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, while the Knights travel to Freeburg at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18.
