Boys basketball roundup: Mater Dei wins regional crown, O’Fallon posts SWC victory
Here is a recap of Friday night’s metro-east basketball action. Records listed are as of completion of play Friday.
Gillespie Regional championship
In a battle of Clinton County foes and cross-town rivals, Mater Dei defeated Breese Central 61-53 to claim the regional crown. The Knights, who posted their third victory of the season against the Cougars, improved to 27-5. Breese Central finished at 15-18.
Mater Dei outscored the Cougars 21-10 in the second quarter, helping pave the way to victory. The Knights Caleb Zurliene led all scorers with 27 points, with teammate Jacob Schadegg adding 12 points. Dalton Boruff led Breese Central with 12 points, while Braden Thomas and Nicholas Warnecke notched 10 points apiece.
Next up: Mater Dei faces the winner of the Paris Regional at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Shelbyville Sectional.
Hamilton County Sectional
At the Class 2A Red Bud Regional, Nashville defeated Althoff 52-27.
The Crusaders, who upset Freeburg in the regional semifinals, finished at 10-19. The Hornets improved to 27-6. Carson Parker paced Nashville with 15 points, while Isaac Turner scored 12 points. Daulton Burgner led Althoff with 10 points.
Next up: Nashville will play the winner of the Carmi (C.-White County) Regional at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hamilton County Sectional.
Valmeyer Regional championship
At the Class 1A Valmeyer Regional, Madison defeated Lovejoy 92-63 The Trojans improved to 23-10, while the Wildcats finished 23-11.
Next up: Madison will face the winner of the Concord (Triopia) Regional at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dupo Sectional.
Edwardsville slips past Belleville East
The Tigers outscored the Lancers 11-2 in the third quarter and ultimately posted a 48-45 victory.
Host Edwardsville improved to 22-9 overall and finished 6-6 in the SWC. Belleville East fell to 17-13, 3-9.
Next up: The host Lancers will face No. 4 seed Belleville West at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Class 4A regional action at East. Edwardsville is also hosting a regional and, seeded third, will face No. 6 seed Quincy at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Granite City takes down Belleville West
The Warriors posted a solid 57-48 non-conference win against the visiting Maroons.
Granite City improved to 13-16, while the Maroons dropped to 15-13. Jahkeis Tippitt was one of three Granite City players in double figures, scoring a team-best 17 points. Rio Dujmovic posted 12 points and Keyon Whit chipped in 10 points. Tommie Williams led West with 18 points, while Greg Wells added 10 points.
Next up: Belleville West faces Belleville East in regional action, while No. 8 seed Granite City faces top-seeded Collinsville at 7 p.m. Tuesday, also at East.
O’Fallon edges Alton
The host Panthers nipped the Redbirds 54-53, improving to 24-6 while finishing 9-3 in the Southwestern Conference. OTHS finished in second place behind Collinsville. The Redbirds finished the regular season at 13-17, 2-10.
Next up: The two teams actually square off again at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Class 4A Edwardsville Regional. O’Fallon is the two seed and Alton the seven.
Triad dispatches Highland
The host Knights defeated the Bulldogs 65-37 in a Mississippi Valley Conference game. Triad, which wrapped up the league crown earlier in the week with a 71-65 win against Mascoutah, concluded the regular season at 23-8 overall, 9-1 in the MVC. Highland dropped to 2-28 overall and finished 1-9 in the MVC.
Next up: Both teams are competing in the Class 3A Triad Regional. No. 9 seed Highland faces No. 8 seed Cahokia at 7 p.m. Monday. The host Knights, seeded third, face No. 7 seed Civic Memorial at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Jerseyville wins at Mascoutah
The visiting Panthers scored a combined 46 points in the second and third quarters en route to a 66-51 win against the Indians.
Jerseyville improved to 19-12 overall while finishing 8-2 in the MVC. Mascoutah dropped to 15-16, 7-3. The Panthers’ Tucker Shalley led all scorers with 30 points, while Seth Churchman added 14 points and Matthew Jackson scored 11 points. Ryan LaJoye led the Indians with 11 points, and teammate Braden Bryant scored 10 points.
Next up: Seventh-seeded Mascoutah faces fourth-seeded Marion at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Class 3A Marion Regional. Jersevyille, seeded No. 4, takes on No. 5 seed Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Taylorville Regional.
