Mater Dei, Madison, O’Fallon, East St. Louis all take regional basketball titles

Here is a recap of Friday’s metro-east boys basketball postseason action.

Mater Dei claims sectional crown

Mater Dei defeated Alton Marquette 42-27 to win the IHSA Class 2A Shelbyville Sectional.

The Knights, who defeated Teutopolis in the sectional semifinals, won their 12th straight game while improving to 29-5. The Explorers, who entered the game on a 15-game winning streak, finished the season 26-7.

Mater Dei now advances to the Carbondale Super-Sectional where it will face Murphysboro at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Against Alton Marquette, the Knights led 17-8 at halftime and continued to play stout defense in the second half en route to the win.

Madison wins sectional championship

Madison continued its march in the postseason, defeating Winchester 59-52 to win the IHSA Class 1A Dupo Sectional crown.

The Trojans, who beat Payson Seymour 69-57 in the sectional semifinals, improved to 25-10 and now will face Athens at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Jacksonville Super-Sectional. Madison trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter but outscored Winchester 20-10 to secure the win.

O’Fallon eases past Edwardsville to secure regional title

The Panthers won their third game against the Tigers this season, posting a 48-42 win in the IHSA Class 4A Edwardsville Regional championship game.

O’Fallon improved to 26-6 and will face Collinsville in the Pekin Sectional semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Belleville West. The Panthers split a pair of games with the Kahoks this season. Edwardsville, meanwhile, finished at 23-10. O’Fallon led 33-23 after three quarters and held on for the triumph.

Drew Tebbe led the Panthers with 11 points, while Shaun Riley II added 10 points. Preston Weaver led the Tigers with 10 points.

East St. Louis wins Triad Regional

The Flyers coasted to the championship at the IHSA Class 3A Triad Regional, defeating the host Knights 65-39.

East St. Louis led 17-9 after a quarter, but Triad regrouped to take a 26-24 halftime margin. However, the Flyers outscored the Knights 24-6 in the decisive third quarter and rolled from there.

East St. Louis improved to 20-11 and now will face Marion at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Mount Vernon Sectional semifinals. Triad, meanwhile, finished the season at 24-9.

Jashawn Anderson paced the Flyers with 24 points, while Armond Williams posted 17 points.
