State bound! Mater Dei, Madison headed to Peoria, while East St. Louis advances
Here is a recap of Tuesday night’s IHSA postseason action.
Mater Dei takes down Murphysboro at Carbondale Super-Sectional
Leading 22-16 at halftime, the Knights outscored Murphysboro 16-0 in the decisive third quarter en route to a 46-26 win at the IHSA Class 2A Carbondale (SIU) Super-Sectional.
Mater Dei won its 13th-straight game while improving to 30-5. Murphysboro finished 27-8. The Knights now advance to the state tournament at the Peoria Civic Center/Carver Arena where they will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Chicago Orr.
Mitchell Haake led Mater Dei with 15 points against Murphysboro, while Caleb Zurliene and Jacob Schadegg added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
In previous postseason action, Mater Dei defeated Alton Marquette 42-27 to win the IHSA Class 2A Shelbyville Sectional.
Madison handles Athens at Jacksvonville Super-Sectoinal
The Trojans rolled past Athens 68-43 at the IHSA Class 1A Jacksonville (Jacksonville Bowl) Super-Sectional.
Madison won its 11th-straight game while improving to 26-10 and now advances to the state tournament at the Peoria Civic Center/Carver Arena where it faces Aurora Christian at 11:15 a.m. Friday. Athens finished 26-10.
Walter Bursey paced the Trojans with 20 points, while Jalen Moore and Javonnie Moore posted 17 points each. Madison led 39-30 after three quarters before overwhelming Athens 29-13 in the final eight minutes.
In previous postseason play, the Trojans defeated Winchester 59-52 to win the IHSA Class 1A Dupo Sectional crown.
East St. Louis defeats Marion at Mount Vernon Sectional
The Flyers had little trouble in the IHSA Class 3A Mount Vernon Sectional semifinals, blowing past Marion 70-53. East St. Louis outscored the Wildcats 24-9 in the second quarter for a 36-18 halftime lead and never looked back.
East St. Louis improved to 21-11 and will play for the sectional championship at 7 p.m. Friday against either Carbondale or Chatham-Glenwood. Those teams play at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Marion finished the season 23-11.
The Flyers had four players in double figures Tuesday, led by Jashawn Anderson’s 18 points. Macaleab Rich added 15 points, while LaShawn Johnson and Jabril Olivaria posted 11 points apiece.
The Flyers advanced to sectional competition by defeating the host Knights 65-39 in the IHSA Class 3A Triad Regional championship.
