Madison, Mater Dei players earn AP all-state basketball honors
On a day after losing their season and championship runs to coronavirus, seniors Caleb Zurliene of Mater Dei and Javonnie Moore of Madison were named to the Associated Press Class 1A-2A All-State Basketball Team.
Moore, a 6-1 guard, is joined by Metro East Lutheran 6-5 junior AJ Smith as Class 1A second team all-state selections. Zurliene, a powerful 6-6 forward, was chosen as a Class 2A second team all-state player.
Smith averaged 17.3 points and 7.9 rebounds for a Knights team which finished 14-17 during the 2018-19 season.
Moore, under the guidance of his uncle and Madison head coach Maurice Baker, had a breakthrough season as he led the Trojans to a 26-10 season and berth in the Class 1A state tournament. Moore averaged 19.2 points, 6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.5 steals per game.
Zurliene was a key player for a Mater Dei team which finished 30-5 and advanced to the Class 2A state finals. Making 61% of his shots from the floor, Zurliene averaged 16.1 points and pulled down nearly six rebounds.
Both Zurliene and Moore has their seasons end Thursday when the Illinois High School Association canceled the state basketball tournaments do to the coronavirus pandemic.
