Freeburg, Mater Dei players earn IBCA first team all-state honors

Freeburg senior Luke Ervie averaged 14.8 ppg in earning IBCA Class 2A first team all-state honors during the 2019-20 season

Freeburg High School guard Luke Ervie and Mater Dei forward Caleb Zurliene headline a large group of metro east area players named to the 2019-20 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A-2A all-state teams.

Ervie, a 6-1 senior, who led the Midgets to a 23-9 record, and the 6-6 Zurliene, a key player on the Knights team which reached the Class 2A state tournament, were both honored as IBCA Class 2A first team all-state selections

Madison senior Javonnie Moore was the lone local player earning Class 1A first team all-state recognition. The IBCA all-state teams were released Saturday.

Ervie, a three-time all-Cahokia Conference first team selection, averaged 14.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists for a Midgets team which was among the top Class 2A teams in southern Illinois.

Zurliene averaged 16.1 points and 6 rebounds for the Knights team which finished 30-5, while the 6-1 Moore led Madison to a 26-10 season and a berth in the Class 1A state finals. Moore averaged .19.2 points, 6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

Both Zurliene and Moore has their seasons end Thursday when the Illinois High School Association canceled the state basketball tournaments do to the coronavirus pandemic.

Several other local players also earned IBCA honors.

In Class 2A, Nashville senior Carson Parker was a second team all-state selection while Dalton Burgner of Althoff was a third team selection.

Earning special mention recognition were Terry Pelcynski and Tristan Hercules of Nashville, Bradon Thomas of Central, Jacob Schadegg of Mater Dei, Gavin Huffman of Roxana and Jackson Holmes of Columbia.

In Class 1A, Jackson Heckert of Okawville and Sebastian Ivory-Greer of Marissa-Coulterville were third team selections. Joe Range of New Athens was a special mention selection.
