Althoff on top in first 3A state basketball rankings; Central boys and girls are both No. 1

Central High School near Breese had the rare distinction of seeing both its boys and girls basketball teams ranked first in the state Tuesday in Class 2A when the Associated Press released its first state basketball rankings of the season.

Althoff (3-1), which finished second in the state in Class 3A last season, was ranked first in the inaugural 3A boys state poll. The Crusaders return all five starters and most of their top players from a 29-4 team.

The Central boys are off to a 4-0 start that included winning the Effingham St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament. The Central girls team is 4-1 with its only loss to 4A O’Fallon.

Okawville (1-0) was second in the Class 1A boys state rankings after reaching the super-sectional a year ago and returning one of the region’s top scorers in junior Noah Frederking. Gibault (4-1) was sixth in 1A while Metro-East Lutheran (4-0), which beat Gibault to win the Metro-East Lutheran Thanksgiving Tournament, was eighth.

Madison received votes in the 1A boys state poll.

Nashville was third in the 2A boys state rankings while Roxana (4-1) was 12th with Marquette also receiving votes.

Mater Dei, Highland and Columbia’s boys teams all received votes ih the first 3A state rankings

Edwardsville (3-1) began the season sixth in the Class 4A boys state rankings, where East St. Louis, Collinsville and Belleville West all received votes.

After the Central girls’ No. 1 ranking, the area’s next highest ranked girls basketball team was Edwardsville (4-0). The Tigers were fourth in the first 4A girls state poll while Highland received votes in 3A and Mater Dei received votes in 2A.

The Lebanon girls, off to a 4-0 start, were ranked eighth in Class 1A.
