Belleville West to honor 1965-66 third-place basketball team; Goalby-Haas fundraiser planned

Belleville West High School is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1965-66 Belleville Township High School boys basketball team that finished third in the state with a reunion at its Jan. 8, 2016 home game against Alton.

All players and coaches from that team are urged to attend that night and will be recognized at halftime of the varsity game. All former Belleville Township High School/Belleville West High School basketball players, coaches and cheerleaders will be admitted free that night.

The 1965-66 team was the most successful in Belleville District 201 basketball history and was the last one as Township High before District 201 split into two high schools, Belleville West and Belleville East. The team finished 27-5 and was led by Joe Wiley and coached by Jerry Turner.

For more information about the event, call Belleville West Athletic Lee Meyer, 222-7665.

Goalby-Haas Dinner and Roundtable

Another major fundraiser being planned by District 201 is the Goalby-Haas Dinner and Roundtable set for April 25 at the St. Clair County Club in Belleville featuring Jay Haas and Bob Goalby.

Haas, who grew up in Belleville, is a former PGA Tour golfer who now plays on the Champions Tour. He has 33 pro wins to his credit, including nine on the PGA Tour and 17 on the Champions Tour.

Haas is the nephew of Goalby, the 1968 Masters champion, and also has played in Ryder Cpp and Presidents Cup events.

Approximately 275 tickets will be made available to the public for the rare opportunity to see and listen to Haas and Goalby together on a visit to Belleville. Among the auction items are a Master’s flag autographed by numerous champions and also an autographed menu from the Masters.

Tickets are $100 each and can be obtained by calling Belleville West Athletic Director Lee Meyer at 222-7665 or Belleville East Athletic Director Mark Larsen at 222-3730.
