The metro-east had two of the top four No. 1-ranked teams in Illinois when Althoff and Okawville were at the top of their respective classes in the latest Associated Press state basketball rankings released Tuesday.
Althoff (11-1), which takes on nationally ranked Chaminade on Saturday at the Highland Shootout, was ranked first in Class 3A. Okawville (13-2), which recently won the Mater Dei Christmas Tournament, was ranked first in Class 1A. The Rockets lost to Nashville on Tuesday.
The 13-2 Central High girls basketball team was ranked first in Class 2A.
The other top-ranked boys teams in the state were Chicago Curie (12-1) in 4A and Teutopolis (12-1) in 2A.
Edwardsville (10-3) was seventh in the Class 4A boys state rankings while Central (12-2) dropped from first to third in Class 2A. Nashville (8-6) also got votes in the 2A poll.
Okawville was first in 1A while Metro-East Lutheran (13-3) was fifth and Gibault (10-4) was 11th.
After Central, the highest-ranked girls teams in the metro-east were Edwardsville (12-1) and Lebanon (14-0). Edwardsville was sixth in Class 4A, while Lebanon was sixth in 1A.
Belleville West got votes in the girls 4A state rankings while Highland was 12th in Class 3A. Mater Dei and Nashville also got votes in the 3A state rankings.
