Central girls basketball still first in state rankings; Althoff, Central and Okawville boys are No. 2

The metro-east still had three teams ranked second in the state when the new Associated Press boys state basketball rankings were released on Tuesday.

Althoff (17-2) was second in Class 3A, Central (19-2) was second in 2A and Okawville (19-3) was second in 1A.

The Central Cougars (21-3) held on to the No. 1 spot in the Class 2A girls state rankings after winning the Highland Invitational Tournament.

Edwardsville (15-4) remained seventh in the Class 4A boys state rankings while Centralia (18-2), which beat Edwardsville in overtime Saturday to win the Salem Invitational Tournament, cracked the 3A poll at No. 10.

Metro-East Lutheran (20-3) moved up to sixth in Class 1A after being eighth the week before while Gibault was 12th. Nashville was 14th in the Class 2A state rankings.

On the girls side, Edwardsville (20-1) stayed third in the Class 4A state rankings after crushing the competition at the Carbondale Mid-Winter Tournament while Belleville West received votes.

In Class 3A, Highland (19-4) fell from seventh to 10th and is just one spot ahead of No. 11 and Mississippi Valley Conference rival Triad.

Lebanon (19-1) moved from seventh to sixth in the Class 1A girls state rankings and Cahokia Conference rival New Athens (18-3), a team Lebanon has beaten three times, was 13th. New Athens is unbeaten against everyone else.
