Althoff and Okawville boys, Central girls all No. 2 in latest state basketball rankings

Althoff and Okawville held onto their No. 2 spots in their respective boys basketball classes when the latest Associated Press boys state basketball rankings came out on Tuesday.

Althoff (21-2), which remained behind top-ranked Morgan Park, received five first-place votes to five for Morgan Park. Althoff travels to eighth-ranked Centralia (21-2) on Friday for a South Seven Conference showdown.

In 2A, the 22-4 Central Cougars boys team dropped from second to third following losses last week to Columbia and Mater Dei.

Okawville (22-3) stayed second in Class 1A while Metro-East Lutheran (21-4) stayed at No. 8. Gibault (17-8) was 12th in the latest 1A state poll.

In the girls basketball state rankings, Edwardsville (24-1) remained third in Class 4A and the Tigers show no signs of slowing down.

Mississippi Valley Conference rivals Highland (23-4) and Triad (21-3) both moved up in the 3A girls state rankings. Highland moved from eighth to seventh while Triad jumped from No. 10 to No. 8.

Central (24-4) had seven first-place votes in Class 2A to only five for Piasa Southwestern (26-3), but the Cougars still dropped from first in the state to second this week.

Lebanon (23-3) dropped out of 1A girls Top 10, falling to 11th. Okawville 14-8) was 15th and New Athens (21-5) was 17th.

The Class 1A and 2A girls basketball playoffs began Monday.
