Althoff and Okawville claim No. 1 spots in new state basketball rankings

Althoff and Okawville were each ranked first in the state Tuesday when The Associated Press released its new boys basketball rankings.

Althoff (24-2) received seven first-place votes to reclaim the top spot from Chicago area powerhouse Morgan Park (22-3), which received four first-place votes and fell from first to second in the rankings.

Althoff plays host to Mount Vernon on Friday for its Senior Night along with a South Seven Conference rivalry game. The Crusaders finished second in the state last season, losing to Westchester St. Joseph in the Class 3A state title game.

Okawville (25-4) took the No. 1 spot in the final Class 1A state ranking this season. The Rockets are the top seed at the Lebanon Regional this week and a heavy favorite to advance.

Edwardsville (21-4) remained fifth in the latest Class 4A state rankings and Central (25-4) remained third in Class 2A. Central is the top seed at the Class 2A Wesclin Regional.

Metro-East Lutheran (24-5) broke back into the Top 10 in Class 1A, coming in at No. 10. Gibault (20-9), which could face Metro-East Lutheran in the Class 1A Bunker Hill Regional final, was 14th in the state poll.
