Collinsville football coach Michael Popovich resigns after two seasons

After just two seasons, Michael Popovich has resigned as the head football coach at Collinsville High School.

Collinsville athletic director Clay Smith confirmed Thursday that Popovich resigned after leading the Kahoks to a 3-15 record.

“It was a family decision,’’ Smith said. “Coach Pop is a stand up guy who did an excellent job in, not only leading our football program, but was a vital part of Collinsville High School in general. He will be missed.’’

Popovich said in an email he was not yet prepared to comment on the resignation.

Smith said that the vacant head coaching position was posted on Wednesday.

Popovich took over the Kahoks program in early 2018 following the resignation of Rick Reinhart after the 2017 season.

A native of Staunton, Popovich was the head coach at Mount Zion High School from 2013-15, finishing 15-14 and leading the program to a pair of Class 4A playoff berths.

Popovich then spent the 2016 season as head coach at Morthland College in West Frankfort before serving a year as an assistant coach at Mascoutah High School under head coach Josh Lee.

The Kahoks were 0-9 this season, their first after leaving the Southwestern Conference for football only following the 2018 season.
