Football results roundup: Milk Bowl, plus O’Fallon, Althoff, Belleville East and more
Week 2 of the metro-east football circuit kicked off Friday night. Here is a brief round-up of some local games.
Mater Dei 27, Breese Central 14
In the annual Milk Bowl, the Knights downed their cross-town rivals.
Mater Dei improved to 1-1 while the Cougars saw their record fall to 1-1.
The Knights’ Drake Rensing rushed for two touchdowns, while quarterback Trenton Zeeb rushed for a score and fired a touchdown pass to Dalton Markus. Connor Freeze and Chase Lewis had rushing touchdowns for the Cougars.
The score was tied 14-14 after three quarters before Mater Dei notched two fourth quarter touchdowns.
Both teams are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, as the Knights host Althoff and Breese Central hosts Red Bud
O’Fallon 35, Troy Buchanan 13
The Panthers, ranked No. 8 in the latest AP Class 8A poll, cruised past the Trojans at home while improving to 2-0.
Quarterback Colt Michael fired three touchdown passes, including a pair to Jalen Smith and another to Kylan Green. Christopher Caldwell, meanwhile, rushed for one touchdown and Green added another TD on the ground. Brogan Hartman connected on all five extra points.
O’Fallon resumes action at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Waubonsie Valley.
Mascoutah 43, Mount Vernon 29
The Indians boosted their record to 2-0 following a 14-point road victory.
Zane Timon threw touchdown passes to JT Curry and Allen Middleton while also rushing for three touchdowns. Middleton returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown as well.
The Indians resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at home against Centralia.
Decatur St. Theresa 54, Althoff 0
After taking down John Burroughs in Week 1, the Crusaders saw their season record even out at 1-1 with a road loss.
Althoff resumes action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Breese Mater Dei. The Knights are coached by former Crusaders star Jimmy Stiebel.
Pekin 33, Belleville East 22
The Lancers dropped to 1-1 following a home loss to Pekin.
Belleville East will look to climb back above .500 on Friday, Sept. 9, when they visit Metea Valley at 7 p.m.
Columbia 9, Waterloo 0
In a rivalry battle of Monroe County teams, the host Eagles blanked the Bulldogs to improve to 1-1. Waterloo, meanwhile, fell to 1-1.
Columbia’s Dominic Voegele accounted for all the points himself, scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run and then booting a 47-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter. Voegele finished with 177 yards rushing on 33 carries while also completing 12-of-16 passes for 71 yards.
Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, as the Eagles visit Alton Marquette and Waterloo hosts Carbondale.
Collinsville 29, Triad 14
The Kahoks improved to 1-1 following a decisive win against the Knights, who dropped to 1-1.
Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, as Collinsville hosts Alton and the Knights entertain Mount Vernon.
Freeburg 38, Nashville 20
The Midets posted an impressive 18-point road win against the Hornets.
Freeburg improved to 2-0 while Nashville dropped to 1-1.
Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, as the Midgets host Chester and the Hornets visit Wesclin.
Red Bud 26, Roxana 15
The Musketeers upped their 2022 mark to 2-0 following a home win against the Shells.
Red Bud trailed 15-7 at halftime before outscoring Roxana 19-0 in the second stanza.
The Musketeers next will visit Breese Central at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
Carbondale 34, Granite City 32
The Warriors fell to 0-2 following a close road loss to the Terriers.
Granite City resumes action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at home against Champaign Central.
