Collinsville remains hot, Columbia star shines, Breese Central rallies for league win
Week 7 of the metro-east football circuit kicked off Friday night. Here is a brief round-up of some local games.
Collinsville at Mount Zion
Collinsville rolled to its sixth-straight victory, defeating Mount Zion 34-7.
The Kahoks, who are now 6-1, resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at home against Champaign Centennial.
Granite City at Mater Dei
Mater Dei improved to 4-3 with a 59-0 win against Granite City, which dropped to 1-6.
Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as Mater Dei visits Effingham and Granite City entertains Quincy Notre Dame.
Alton at East St. Louis
East St. Louis upped its mark to 5-2 overall, 4-0 in the Southwestern Conference with an 80-0 win against Alton, which fell to 1-6, 1-3.
TaRyan Martin had two early touchdown runs while Larevious Woods added another and Michael Tillman had a blocked punt recovery in the end zone for the Flyers.
Both teams resume league play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as East St. Louis hosts Edwardsville and Alton visits O’Fallon.
Cahokia at Mount Vernon
Cahokia evened its South Seven Conference record at 2-2 while improving to 3-4 overall with a 32-26 win against Mount Vernon.
The Rams dropped to 5-2, 3-1.
Both teams resume league play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as the Comanches travel to Althoff and the Rams host Centralia.
Civic Memorial at Mascoutah
Mascoutah improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 50-6 win against Civic Memorial, which dropped to 1-6, 0-4.
Zane Timon fired a pair of touchdown passes to Allen Middleton and another to Quincy Hall to anchor the Indians’ offense. Middleton and Kanoa Owens also had touchdown runs
Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as Mascoutah visits Highland and Civic Memorial travels to Jerseyville.
Triad at Jerseyville
Triad eased to a 41-14 victory while improving to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Jerseyville dropped to 2-5, 0-4.
Both teams resume conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as Triad hosts Waterloo and Jerseyville entertains Civic Memorial.
Roxana at Breese Central
Breese Central scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to rally for a 20-13 win against Roxana.
The Cougars improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference. The Shells dropped to 4-3, 2-2.
Trailing 13-0 at halftime, Conner Freeze connected with Braden Revermann on an 18-yard touchdown pass to get the Cougars within 13-7. Chase Lewis then posted a two-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and added the extra point himself for a 14-13 lead. Kaden Rakers’ three-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter made it 20-13 and Breese Central’s defense made that stand up.
Both teams are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as Breese Central hosts Columbia and Roxana visits Wood River.
Wood River at Freeburg
Wood River overcame an early 10-0 deficit to defeat Freeburg 36-30.
The Oilers improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference. The Midgets, meanwhile, dropped to 3-4, 1-3.
Cole Stuart’s two-yard touchdown run and Neil Thompson’s 20-yard field goal put Freeburg ahead 10-0 after one quarter. The Midgets still led 17-14 at halftime thanks in part to Tucker Murphy’s 40-yard touchdown run. However, touchdown runs from Seth Slayden and Brayden St. Peters — coupled with Slayden’s two-point conversion runs on both scores — put Wood River ahead for good at 30-17.
Murphy added a touchdown while AJ Banks connected with Landon Townley for a touchdown, but the Oilers ultimately prevailed.
Both teams resume play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as Wood River hosts Roxana and Freeburg visits Salem.
Salem at Columbia
Columbia won for the fifth time in six games, disposing of Salem 44-7.
The Eagles improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference. Salem dropped to 1-6, 0-4.
Dominic Voegele again had a huge night for the Eagles, connecting with Brennan Weik, Zach Wetzel and Carter Hicks for touchdown passes while running for two scores — including one for 95 yards — and booting five extra points.
Both teams are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as Columbia visits Breese Central and Salem entertains Freeburg.
Red Bud at Wesclin
Red Bud rolled to 49-0 win against the Warriors, while improving to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Illinois Division of the Cahokia Conference. Wesclin fell to 1-6, 1-3.
Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, as the Musketeers visit Chester and the Warriors host Carlyle.
