East St. Louis posts key win against Edwardsville, Columbia star soars, O’Fallon rolls

Week 8 of the metro-east football circuit kicked off Friday night. Here is a brief round-up of some local games with Belleville East and Belleville West set to square off at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Edwardsville at East St. Louis

The Flyers had their first real test in Southwestern Conference action but came away with a 26-7 win against the Tigers.

A pair of TaRyan Martin touchdown runs staked East St. Louis to a 12-0 lead in the third quarter. Edwardsville cut the deficit to 12-7 when Jake Curry connected with Joey DeMare for a 40-yard touchdown pass with 6:28 left in the third quarter.

However, another Martin touchdown run followed by Robert Battle’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Rico Bond helped the Flyers pull away.

Larevious Woods rushed for 130 yards on 15 carries for East St. Louis.

Both teams conclude regular season action Friday, Oct. 21, as East St. Louis visits De Smet at 6 p.m. and Edwardsville travels to CBC for a 7 p.m. game.

Alton at O’Fallon

The Panthers improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Southwestern Conference action following a 52-0 victory against the Redbirds, who dropped to 1-7, 1-4.

Both teams conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, as O’Fallon hosts Cahokia and Alton entertains Althoff.

Waterloo at Triad

The Knights overcame a 13-7 deficit to ease past the Bulldogs 28-13.

Triad improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Waterloo fell to 5-3, 3-2.

Both teams conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, as Waterloo visits Freeburg and Triad hosts Lincoln.

Columbia at Breese Central

Dominic Voegele had touchdown runs of 60 yards, 82 yards and 63 yards in helping the Eagles to a 28-27 road win against the Cougars.

Chase Lewis and Conner Freeze had touchdown runs for Breese Central, while Colin Cooper caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Lewis.

Columbia improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference. The Cougars dropped to 6-2, 4-1.

Voegle finished with an astounding 385 yards rushing on 23 carries (16.74 per carry average).

Both teams conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, as Breese Central visits Herrin and Columbia entertains Jerseyville.

Freeburg at Salem

The Midgets dropped their fifth-straight contest, falling to the Wildcats 21-14.

Freeburg fell to 3-5 overall and 0-5 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference. The Wildcats improved to 1-7, 1-4.

Both teams conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, as Freeburg hosts Waterloo and Salem entertains Charleston.

Roxana at Wood River

The Shells improved to 3-2 in the Mississippi Division of the Cahokia Conference 5-3 overall following a 35-27 win against the Oilers.

Wood River dropped to 6-2, 3-2.

Both teams conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, as Roxana hosts Alton Marquette and Wood River visits Red Bud.

Red Bud at Chester

Chester defeated Red Bud 12-7 to secure first place in the Illinois Division of the Cahokia Conference.

The Yellowjackets improved to 5-3 overall while finishing league play at 5-0. The Musketeers dropped to 6-2, 4-1.

Both teams conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, as Red Bud hosts Wood River and Chester visits Lanark Eastland.

Champaign Centennial at Collinsville

The Kahoks posted their sixth-straight victory, defeating Champaign Centennial 15-14 in overtime.

The game was deadlocked at 7-7 heading to the extra session. After Champaign Centennial scored, Collinsville responded with a touchdown. The Kahoks then went for two and got it, sending them to victory.

Collinsville concludes regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Centralia.

Quincy Notre Dame at Granite City

The Warriors fell to 1-7 following a 48-0 loss to the Raiders.

Granite City concludes regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Belleville East.

Mater Dei at Effingham

Mater Dei fell to 4-4 following a 17-0 road loss to Effingham.

The Knights conclude regular season action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at home against Mount Zion with a chance to become playoff-eligible.
