Collinsville wins 8th-straight while Breese Central, Waterloo & Mascoutah post wins
Week 9 of the metro-east football circuit kicked off Friday night. Here is a brief round-up of some local games.
Of note, the the playoff selection show is/was set for Saturday night.
Edwardsville at CBC
The Tigers finished the regular season with a 44-17 loss to the Cadets.
Edwardsville is 6-3 and now will gear up for the postseason.
East St. Louis at De Smet
The Flyers rolled to a 40-10 win against the Spartans to finish the regular season at 7-2.
Quarterback Robert Battle connected Jesse Watson for three touchdown passe and with Christopher Bennett Jr. on another score. Larevious Woods added a rushing touchdown for East St. Louis.
Next up for the Flyers is the postseason.
Effingham at Highland
The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with a 34-20 win against Effingham.
Highland quarterback Brent Wuebbels had two touchdown runs and threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Brode Lewis and a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brenden Gelly.
Highland improved to 8-1 and now will gear up for the playoffs.
Carbondale at Mascoutah
The Indians concluded regular season action with a 50-23 win against the Terriers.
Mascoutah improved to 6-3 and now will prep for the postseason.
Zane Timon passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another two in leading the Indians to victory. Allen Middletown caught two of Timon’s scoring strikes while returning a kickoff for a touchdown and rushing for another score. Quincy Hall also caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Lincoln (Illinois) at Triad
Triad stayed red hot, defeating Lincoln 28-0 to win for the sixth time in seven games.
The Knights improved to 7-2 and now will ready for the postseason.
Triad quarterback Nic Funk threw two touchdown passes to Tashon Cockarell and another to Colin Qualls while Jason Randoll posted a rushing score.
Jerseyville at Columbia
The Panthers posted a 19-0 win against the Eagles.
Chase Withrow notched all three touchdowns for Jerseyville, all on the ground.
Jerseyville finished the season at 4-5 while Columbia dropped to 6-3. The Eagles will now prepare for the postseason.
Breese Central at Herrin
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 27-9 win against the Tigers.
Breese Central improved to 7-2 and now will ready for the upcoming posteason.
Waterloo at Freeburg
Waterloo rolled to a 45-14 victory while improving to 6-3.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the postseason. Freeburg, after starting 3-0, finished at 3-6.
Wood River at Red Bud
The Musketeers improved to 7-2 with a 14-12 win against the Oilers, who dropped to 6-3.
Red Bud’s Chase Lucht returned a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown while Thomas Friess connected with Owen Liefer for a 14-yard touchdown pass.
Both teams now will prep for the playoffs.
Collinsville at Centralia
The Kahoks won for the eighth-straight time, rallying past Centralia 35-31.
Collinsville (8-1) trailed 14-0 and 31-21 before coming back to win.
The Kahoks now will prepare for the postseason.
Mount Zion at Mater Dei
The Knights lost 38-35 to Mount Zion and saw their season end at 4-5.
Drake Rensing’s 5-yard touchdown run with 1:02 left in the third quarter had given Mater Dei a 35-31 lead. Rensing also had two other rushing touchdowns and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Trenton Zeeb posted a touchdown run for the Knights as well.
Mount Zion scored with 1:18 left to erase a 35-31 deficit.
