Saturday recap: Waterloo dominates; Red Bud, Breese Central, Mascoutah also advance

The opening weekend of the 2022 high school football postseason is happening Friday night and Saturday afternoon at community stadiums throughout Illinois and the metro-east.

Here is a brief round-up of Saturday’s local games:

Dupo at Camp Point Central, Class 1A

Making its first playoff appearance since 2012, Dupo suffered a 66-0 loss to No. 2 seed Camp Point Central.

The No. 15 seed Tigers finished the season at 5-5.

Nashville at Red Bud, Class 2A

The No. 6 seed Musketeers advanced to the second round following a 34-21 win against the No. 11 seed Hornets.

Red Bud improved to 8-2, while Nashville finished at 7-3.

Musketeers quarterback Thomas Friess completed 8-of-13 for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

Roxana at Hillsboro, Class 3A

The ninth-seeded Shells advanced to the second round following a 13-7 victory against the No. 8 seed Hilltoppers.

Roxana is now 7-3, while Hillsboro finished at 6-4.

The Shells now will face Fairbury Prairie Central in a road game next weekend.

Mount Zion at Breese Central, Class 4A

The fifth-seeded Cougars are headed to the second round following a 21-18 win against No. 12 seed Mount Zion.

Breese Central improved to 8-2 while Mount Zion finished 6-4.

Senior Chase Lewis had a rushing touchdown for the Cougars while fellow senior Conner Freeze connected with sophomore Carter Deien on a 20-yard score.

Wood River at Coal City, Class 4A

The No. 9 seed Oilers saw their season end following a 22-6 loss to eighth-seeded Coal City.

Wood River wrapped up at 6-4 while Coal City improved to 6-4.

Waterloo at Olney Richland County, Class 4A

The No. 10 seed Bulldogs steamrolled to a 76-28 victory against No. 7 seed Olney Richland-County.

Waterloo improved to 7-3 while Olney finished at 7-3.

The Bulldogs now will face Sacred Heart-Griffin in a second round game next weekend.

Marion at Mascoutah, Class 5A

The seventh-seeded Indians advanced into the second round and earned a date with fellow Mississippi Valley Conference foe Highland following a come-from-behind 21-20 win against No. 10 Marion.

Mascoutah improved to 7-3, while the Wildcats finished at 6-4.

Senior Allen Middleton’s 53-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter sent the Indians to victory. Middleton also had touchdown runs of 5 and 77 yards, helping Mascoutah overcome a 20-15 deficit.

The Indians lost to Highland 56-0 on Oct. 14. The game will take place at Highland next weekend.

Centralia at Triad, Class 4A

The No. 12 seed Orphans pulled off the upset on the road, defeating the fifth-seeded Knights 27-14.

Centralia improved to 6-4 while Triad finished at 7-3.

Oak Lawn Richards at East St. Louis, Class 6A

The No. 6 seed Flyers rolled past No. 11 seed Oak Lawn Richard 71-0.

East St. Louis, the AP’s top-rated team in Class 6A, won for the seventh-straight time to improve to 8-2. Oak Lawn Richards finished at 6-4.

Here is a brief round-up of Friday’s local games:

Madison at Colfax Ridgeview/Lexington, Class 1A

Madison, seeded No. 16, saw its season end with a 47-14 loss to No. 1 seed Colfax Ridgeview/Lexington.

The Trojans finished 5-4. Colfax improved to 10-0.

Columbia at Murphysboro/Elkville Elverado, Class 4A

The No. 11 seeded Eagles saw their season end at 6-4 following a 41-28 loss to No. 6 Murphysboro/Elkville Elverado.

Dominic Voegele threw three touchdown passes for Columbia — 62 yards to Zach Wetzel, 32 yards to Brennan Wek and 15 yards to Weik. Cameron Janik also had a touchdown run for the Eagles.

Columbia led 7-0, was tied at 14 in the second quarter and still only trailed 28-21 in the third quarter before ultimately losing by 13.

Bradley-Bourbonnais at Collinsville, Class 7A

The Kahoks won their ninth-straight game, slipping past Bradley Bourbonnais 14-12.

Collinsville, seeded No. 8, is now 9-1. Bradley-Bourbonnais, seeded No. 25, finished at 5-5. The Kahoks now will face Chicago (Brother Rice) in a second round game next weekend.

Collinsville jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as Jerry Richardson and Ethan Bagwell posted touchdown runs. Bagwell also had a two-point conversion run.

Bradley-Bourbonnais then chipped away, scoring touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters, but the Kahoks ultimately slammed the door.
